Poops Anywhere;

post #1 of 2
Thread Starter
We've got a rescue cat we fostered awhile back,not even sure of his age but he seems kind of old. He also seems like he was probably an outside cat but where we are in the city we don't feel safe with him outside. Anyway recently he's started pooping in places like the bathtub and just randomly on the floor. I've heard it might be because he may be upset about something but he really seems to have warmed up to us over time. He goes in the litterbox sometimes I think also so I don't think it's the litter. Could it be because he shares boxes with our female?...

There are a few reasons for this kind of litter box avoidance:

-not enough litter boxes. Many cats prefer one box for pee and one for poop. In addition some cats do not like to share a litte box with antoehr cat. Adding more boxes may solve the problem.

-boxes not clean enough. Most cats are very fastidious and will not use a dirty litter box. If you aren't keeping the boxes clean, that may be part of the problem.

-health problems.

Constipation...it hurts to poop, or is difficult to poop, kitty blames the box and poops in other places.

Constipation can be a symptom of other diseases such as kidney disease and arthritis.

Your first step should be to take him to the vet for a check up. Have a blood chemistry panel done, including thyroid, and a urinalysis. Discuss the possibility of arthritis also.

An x ray can help diagnose arthritis and also to see if a megacolon is developing from chronic constipation.
