Question about Amoxicillin human formulas

Would there be a problem giving a cat liquid Amoxicillin meant for a human (from a human pharmacy) rather than using a veterinary formula? I was mainly concerned with the fruit flavoring that's added to the human formulas. Apparently they come that way and the pharmacist has no control over it. Would those be bad for cats?

The vet thought it was odd that my cat had some vomiting and diarrhea after taking the human formula. But the cat didn't have any problems taking Penicillin when he was a kitten. The only thing I can think of that would contribute or cause vomiting and diarrhea is that I mixed the (liquid) Amoxicillin in with canned cat food. The Penicillin was tablets for humans.

If your cat had a problem with it, then it could be a problem... There is no 100% sure way of telling though, because amoxicillin itself can cause vomit and diarrhea as a side effects... Sometimes they are prescribed along with other meds for diarrhea or pepsid to control nausea.
What are you using it for?

That is what my vet prescribes at a rate of 2ml per day for 5 days. He does the powder that you mix yourself. I haven't had a problem although my friend the pharmacist was all confused. That said, oral penicillin can have that affect on not only cats but people, and for that matter, any other species of patient, so anti-emitics and anti-diarreals are often added as a second course of meds in adjunct to the oral antibiotics.

Many cats cannot tolerate amoxi or clavamox. Also I have noticed the more times they have to take it the more the intolerance grows.

None of my cats can tolerate it anymore.

There are other antibiotics, if the penicillin makes your cats sick, tell your vet, so s/he can prescribe something else. Be sue to have it placed in his record NO penicillin and that also includes the convenia shot.

My Megan has a bladder infection and she couldn't tolerate Clavamox (vomiting) . The vet gave us Marbofloxacin and she's done well with that.

He was given Amoxicillin a few weeks ago to see if it would help with eye discharge since it cured his sister. He was prescribed 50mg twice a day. For the first dose I mixed it in a small amount of canned food and he vomited/regurgitated within 5-10 minutes. For the next few doses I mixed it in a small amount of canned food and a small amount of vanilla low-fat yogurt. About 50% of the time he vomited/regurgitated shortly after. He had diarrhea once and that's when the vet said to stop giving it to him. It's unclear if it helped with his eye discharge.

He's getting dental work done soon and the two antibiotic choices are Amoxicillin and Clindamycin. It would be nice to know if the Amoxicillin was causing the vomiting and diarrhea or if it was something else such as the fruit flavorings added to it. I can get the liquid Amoxicillin for free but the Clindamycin is about $25.00. So it would be nice to know what the problem is with the Amoxicillin. I suppose that maybe giving it to him with food caused the vomiting. Or maybe it was just coincidental. But I'd hate to try Amoxicillin again right after he's had dental work. It wouldn't be good if he vomited after a tooth extraction.

Amoxi should be given with food to help prevent upset stomach. If he is vomiting on the amoxi I would not use it on him again, ever.

Clindamycin (antirobe) is better for dental issues anyway.

Clindamycin is the antibiotic of choice for dental work... I would not give Amoxi again either.
