How to disinfect room

Thread Starter
I adopted a sick kitty. He is finally getting better and will be able to roam around the house and meet my other cats soon. Does anybody know how to disinfect the room the kitty was confined to? I have some workout equipment in there. Do I just use soap and water to clean all the surfaces? I don’t want to use bleach. What about vinegar? Should I clean the carpet too?

Use bleach, lysol, or chlorhexidine, they're the only commercially available cleaners that kill just about everything and deactivate more serious bacteria. Soap kills nothing, it's used to break down oils and make things slippery so you can wash stuff off.
Vinegar kills some, but not the tougher stuff.

Carpet depends.. Kitty probably came with some sort of internal parasite, too, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to clean it.

I use a veterinary disinfectant in spray bottle, or mop bucket to clean cattery area's.

I mop the cat room with diluted bleach water and wipe down the table with it as well. It keeps things sanitized and smelling fresh.

I also have Chlorhexidine on hand for the rat cage and I have used it to clean the cat table when one of them has been ill.

Bleach works, but so does ammonia. Just don't mix the two!

Depends on what your kitty had. Coccidia isn't killed well by bleach.

^The lysol concentrate mixed up to the proper amount with water works, though.
