Switching boxes

My kittens haven't ever seemed picky for litter boxes, but I really think we need to switch.
We started around with just a cardboard box when they were tiny, then moved to one of those ferret corner boxes soon after, as they could easily climb into it.
Now, we have two normal uncovered boxes, and one that looks like it has a second box upside down on top, but with the center cut out...they have to jump in, but I was hoping it would keep them from spreading litter everywhere... it doesn't.

At the moment, I have the litter box with the lip in the bedroom, and the normal uncovered one on the coffee table where the dog can't get it... I want to switch to covered boxes.
Is there anything I can do to make sure they will like it, other then just offering such a box and seeing what happens? Will it keep them from spreading litter? Do you think it will keep the dog out? My mom suggested one with a flap, but that will be even harder to get them to use.
Any suggestions are really appreciated, I'm tired of walking on litter, and having a box on the coffee table!

I dont know about covered boxes because all mine hate them but try looking online for litter mats. Dr Foster and Smith has atleast one in their catalog. It helps keep the litter off their paws from getting on your floor. Also try a rubbermaid big storage container. There are people on here who use those as litter boxes. I actually got high sided boxes from Tractor Supply to keep my litter throwers under control. It helped a lot I only have to vacuum their room once a day compared to 2 or more times.

I don't like covered boxes, they hold in odors, and I think would be a pain in the neck to clean.

Putting a good quality door mat down in front of the boxes will help control tracked litter.

I use the rubbermaid(tm) containers in addition to traditional boxes.

We don't have much of a problem with them tracking the litter, Lennon is just hooorrible about flinging it everywhere. I will try one of the big rubbermaid tubs, and see if that helps...if they can jump in... and if the dog stays out!

Personally I do not like the covered ones. If you are using regular litter, its still quite dusty when they dig in it - and IMO they are breathing in that dust. I had one and the cats didn't like it covered, so I removed the lid.

With any litter its still tracked out - you could get a mat or towel in front to catch most of the litter from their feet.

We use the pellet litter and its not dusty at all.
