My kitten Mailo who is about 6 months loves fruits.
At first I thought he just liked to smell them but nope
he actually likes to eat them and wont leave me alone
till get gets some. He likes watermelon, cherries, nectarines and peaches,
Probably other fruits as well. I do give him a little bit but I'm not sure if its okay.
Should I stop? or just let him eat them?

The sugars in fruit is higher than a cat is really meant to digest (regularly) so don't offer them very often and only tiny amounts. Always remove seeds and pits - all pits and many fruit seeds are toxic.

And never give avocado to any animal. Humans are pretty much the only animal who can safely eat them.

My cat Linus also loved watermelon.

Warning: No grapes or raisins for the kitties, though. They are bad for them.

It is on other lists as being safe. I've always read that there is no proof either way of it being safe or unsafe. Is there new evidence of it unsafe? What happens to animals who eat it? (mine were all fine). I understand the philosophy of erring the side of caution, just wondering if there has been new findings on this and what it does to animals.

Being on one unsafe list is enough for me.

I'm glad your animals were find this time, but I wouldn't chance it again.

I found this:

Avocado:

Avocado contains a toxin known as persin. It is found in all parts of the avocado & is toxic to most domestic animals.

The symptoms include gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory distress, congestion, fluid accumulation around the tissues of the heart and even death. [1]

“Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark contain a toxic principle known as persin. The Guatemalan variety, which is the most common variety found in stores, appears to be the most problematic,” according to Dana Farbman, CVT, of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.

The primary concern is with gastrointestinal irritation, such as vomiting and diarrhea. Typically, these effects are seen in animals that have ingested significant quantities of fruit or branches.

If you suspect that your cat has eaten avocado — or any other potentially dangerous substance — call your veterinarian or the Poison Control Center’s emergency hotline at (888) 426-4435 for 24-hour telephone assistance.

Thanks, they didn't eat very much of it so that is probably why they were okay, I just googled it and there is a lot more info about it than there used to be!

Oh, another reason I thought it was okay is because it is in the ingredient list of some high quality pet foods!!

all the info seems to suggest that its harmful if eaten in large quantities (that is true of many foods even ones that are very good for you). I think in small quantities it is fine. Garlic is also on a lot of unsafe lists but is actually very healthy for dogs and cats in small quantities. They even sell garlic tabs for pets because of this.

As a rule, I never let my cats eat human food. Don't want to risk it and this way, they never beg since they don't know what they're missing.
