I have a foster kitten from the feral colony in our neighborhood. She is a tad younger than the other kittens i am fostering, but she seemed to be doing quite well (we have had her for almost 2 weeks). All the kittens were tested for fe-luk etc and tested negative, had her first round of shots, and has been de-wormed. I had noticed that my dogs had been grooming her a bit, and i now have found out that she has diarrhea.. she also seems quieter than the other kittens, but i am not sure if that is just a n age thing. She seems to have a good appetite, but i am a bit worried. Of course it is a holiday weekend.. so.. I feel that as long as she is eating, we are ok til i can get her into the vet. Does anyone have any suggestions?
thanks for your help!

Diarhea in young kittens is fairly common, especially of they have lived outdoors. How old are they now? Has there been any chance in diet lately? Sometimes new foods upset their stomachs a bit- as long as there's no blood in it and she's acting normal, and eating constantly, you shouldn't need to worry too much yet. Keep an eye on her, and if she gets worse, take her to the vet. Thanks for helping fostering!

she is probably around 7 weeks. I have been unable to catch her three sibs, wooing them with chicken the past few days. She was pretty easy to catch.. maybe that was because she was feeling under the weather. we have had to contain her in a bathroom as she is getting diarrhea all over... i feel so bad for her up there. Hopefully she will get it under control soon so we can let her back out in the house with everyone else.

If she is getting much diarrhea, it may be not enough with common water to replace water loss. The loss of salts "electrolytes" is dangerous.

Pedialyte should be ideal.

If you dont have access to first-rate pedialyte, you can make own emergency pedialyte. Works for cats, children and yourself as good.

The basic receipt may be:

1 litre water
1 soup spoon dextrose (= grape sugar), if you dont have dextrose handy, honey is OK
1 tea spoon salt (=kitchen salt, NaCl). If you have a kitchen salt with different salts, including KCl - still better. They sell such alternative kitchen salt in Sweden in any case.

Cook up and stir, cool down to drinking temp.... Dont spare too long, better to make new every day.

This basic recipe was the big weapon against the great manslaughter, Cholera.
Alone reducing the death rate from 80% into "mere" 10%.

Tx for helping this little one (and the others too!)

Good luck!
