what breed is my cat (pic inside)

can someone tell me his breed?

I need to know it for travel documents.

In his booklet it says Persian(but not a pure I think he is crossed breed.)
But what is he as Persians are not allowed to travel.

The vet wrote "Persian" but you guys said not!

Without papers, he is "just" a Domestic Long Hair. He is definitely not Persian, even by appearance, as defined by the sanctioning bodies.

In fact, he's a gorgeous boy who looks a lot like our Punkin, who is also a DLH.

thanks for your reply

I googled the DLH and I noticed they have a long facial hair where my cat doesn't!

Does that still makes him DLH? or maybe he falls into a different category?

Yep he is not a Persian at all.
He is a DLH for sure.

Why can't Persians travel??

There is no standard for domestic long (or short) hairs, just common everyday moggies (also known as domestics or house cats). Available in any coat colour, any ear size, any shape face etc.

Your cat, although very cute does not appear to be a Persian.

Rules

that's what they sent me when I asked for required documents.

"Note :
As checked-in baggage, only certain breeds of cats and dogs can be accepted on Emirates flights (refer UAE banned list below )for the ones that cannot be accepted.

Cats:
Burmese
Himalayan
Exotic
Persian

This list is subject to changes. The restriction applies mainly on pure breeds. Some cross breeds of the above listed dogs and cats can be accepted under special pre-arrangements via your local Sky Cargo office."

So should I go to vet and tell them to change the breed?

Technically he's a domestic longhair cat. But IMO he's got more of a Maine Coon in the background then a Persian. I'd call him a Maine Coon mix rather then a Persian mix.

Looks like the reason those breeds are on the list is because of the flatter faces and more breathing problems. But I know that people show Persians and those other breeds and fly with them.

He is beautiful and sure looks alot like our Speedboat. I agree there might be some Maine Coon there.

I agree on both thoughts.

If it is by any reason important for you to attach some sort of breed relation, not just Domestic Long Hair, call him MCO-mix...It may even be thrue! Why the vet wrote Persian I dont know. He isnt not even really like old type persians... Probably the vet meant simply longhaired cat.
It is well known most vets dont know much about breeds. They CAN be however be very skilled at practical handling and treatment of cats - I had myself met such vets.

And yes, the air company was prob afraid about breathing problems in these Persian-alike short nosed breeds. As Golden Kitty said - a well bred Persian doesnt have real difficulties. But I suppose the Air company doesnt want to risk complications - like law suits, or bad rumorours because it happened one of the cats something out of the ordinary...

And really nothing to wonder. Not all persian are well bred... Imagine a backyard breader taking his chance for getting some extra income. And lotsa of unhealthy cats to get rid off.... And A couple of millions to win perhaps...
I can understand the air-companys directors.

Congrats to your beatiful furry friend!
And good luck with this travel!

All the breeds you guys mentioned had long facial hair especially under the chin, while mine has very short hair under the chin!

You scared me about the breathing problem =o(
My cat is a very scared one. He's scared of riding the car even if it was a 5 min drive, so I though of sedating him before I go to the airport. Is it safe?
Cause I think he'll have a heart attack when we arrive at the airport and see all those people and driving the luggage and take off and landing.
When I have people over he hides or get out of the house until the next day.

But still very confused of the breed.

I'm sure you are thinking of the "ruff" on the neck of long hair cats. That comes with time - sometimes it may take 3-4 yrs for a Persian or Maine Coon to develop a full coat. This depends on the lines. Some never get that "fluffy".

Take our word on it - the cat is not a Persian, its more of a Maine Coon type then anything else. Without papers, he's a domestic longhair. Ask your vet to change it to domestic longhair or Maine Coon mix.

And do NOT sedate the cat for air travel. Cats don't react to sedation very well (especially for flying). If he's out of it or partially out of it and gets scared he could choke. I'm not trying to scare you, but sedation is not recommended - even if the vet says its ok.

When flying put a harness/leash on him in the carrier. You will have to take him out of it and hold him while the carrier is scanned thru x-ray. Hold him tight to you. Then put him right back in. You do know you need the soft-sided carriers for plane rides when he's under the seat in front of you.

Will you be flying with your cat in cabin? If so, I fail to see why there would be any restrictions at all.

The short-nosed cat and dog breeds are not allowed to fly cargo when temperatures are at certain extremes. These restrictions should not apply if the cat is flying in cabin with a human passenger, as they would not be exposed to the outside environment.

I do not recommend sending a cat unaccompanied in cargo.

Without papers you can't know what breed your cat is, even if it looked identical to a persian you wouldn't be able to know for sure without papers. The vets will use "DLH or DSH" if they don't know, so you can tell them to change it to that, but it doesn't matter anyway, the point is the kitty must have some very very beautiful and unique ancestors regardless of the breed because he's soo handsome..
Definitely not a Persian to me.
I would say DLH. Domestic Long Hair.
I love the orange kitties (red kitties)
Adorable!

thanks everyone.

I talked to the vet and she told me that his short nose makes him a persian.
Like most of us said - he's NOT a Persian and few vets know the breeds. Get him changed to domestic longhair.

Maybe you need to take a photo of a real Persian to him

That's like saying "all spotted cats are Bengals/Ocicats" or "all grey cats are Russian Blues".

There is not always a choice, no animals are allowed on board over here and may not be in the OP's country either.
I've not had a problem shipping cats or receiving them in cargo.
Wow Laureen - I love the pattern on your bicolor - that's pretty cool looking

And yes, I agree, your cat has a flatter face then the OP's cat!

@GoldenKitty45
I know but she said his shortened nose and Persian look won't fool anyone!

@laureen227
Awww pixel is so cute
how old is he? And why was he named pixel?

@missymotus
True. I never wanted to send him as cargo but thank God I was able to find another airline that will let me keep him in the cabin with me.
He's not a Persian. He's what we call an Orange Boy or Creamsicle Cat.
Mum - personally I'd find another vet who will put the cat down as a domestic longhair and not a Persian. The only one that is being "fooled" is your vet - she really doesn't know her cats!

He doesn't even remotely look like a Persian

Some real ones for you - or to print off to your vet. The 2nd one is an Exotic, but a very bad quality one (head type wise_
post #25 of 38
I'd print out some photos for your vet or better yet, bring in a book of cat breeds and show him the Persian photos!
Please get another vet - your cat is NOT, simply not a Persian, at all, not remotely. Your vet is wrong and keeping you from traveling... If there is only one Airlines choice, but other choices of vets the solution is simple - go to another vet.

Surprisingly 3 vets said he's a Persian!
I don't know what to tell you... Just that that cat is not a Persian... I wonder if you are not in the US... and in some other country vets call Long hair domestic cats Persians? Weird. But you look at him and you look at a Persian - and he is not one.
Hmmm, very odd
Your cat is not a Persian, there has been a Persian cat breeder that has told you it isnt a persian

He is a domestic long hair
