RIP Chynna

I did the saddest thing I've ever had to do today. Chynna was euthanized today.

Her health has been declining over the last several months. She had end stage renal failure and hyperthyroidism. And while she was still a very loving kitty and pooped and peed and drank, she was barely eating and was wasting away. I could see her getting thinner and weaker each day and it was taking her a few tries to jump up on the couch. Plus she had started to throw up 3 to 4 times per day and she was losing hair by the handful.

Last week I had decided that this would be our last summer together. But over that time I've had time to think and re-evaluate my decision.

17 years ago or so, someone had abandoned Chynna in the stairwell of a building I was living in at the time. The security guards cared for her and tried to find her home, but no one claimed her after a week so they put her outside the building which was sandwiched between 2 major traffic/truck routes. I found her the next morning and took her in with every intention of taking her to the Humane Society that evening after work. However, that never happened. When I got home she was sound asleep on the foot of my bed and when I picked her up she purred and put her front legs around my neck and hugged my neck and proceeded to give me tons of nose kisses and head butts. She had picked me as her special person. The rest is history.

She was the best kitty I've ever had. She was a social butterfly and very laid back. Never once did she scratch me or bite me or scratch up my furniture. And she was a real love-bug!! Yes, sometimes her loving personality could be too much because if she had her way, I would have been carrying her around 24/7 with the exception of delivering her to the food/water dish and litter and then picking her right back up again.

I promised her from the very start that I would never let her suffer and that I would let her go while she still had her kitty dignity. I didn't want her last memories or mine, to be of her sick and struggling to live because I couldn't let her go.

Her favourite doctor was there, Dr. Worb. She really loved him. They were very respectful and gentle.

Goodnight my beautiful girl! Chynna, thank you for choosing me as your special person! It was an honour having had you as part of my life. I'll miss you, but my heart will always remember what a wonderful and special kitty you were. And I know while you couldn't understand why Abby was so afraid of you, I know she will be missing you in her own way too.

Here are 2 pictures of her from 3 years ago.

EDIT: I posted pictures, but they don't seem to be showing up. Here are links to the images:

Chynna was beautiful! I know it doesn't feel like it right now but you really did the kindest thing you could have possibly done for her. I know just what you're going through...my Snowball was also 17 years old and suffering from end stage renal failure when I had to make the decision to euthanize him a couple of years ago.

My thoughts are with you.

I need to thank someone, but he doesn't seem to be an active member anymore, and I can't see a way to send a PM to him. I did find an old email and have sent it, but in the event that it doesn't arrive and he still reads these forums....

Quote:
Gerry, in the spring of 2008 you stepped in and paid for Chynna's entire dental procedure.

I was shocked, but oh so grateful to you! I don't think a day has gone by since that I haven't thought of you and what a wonderful gift you gave to me and Chynna! And I've been paying your kindness forward every chance that I get. I now know why you did what you did. It's a wonderful feeling to help someone, even a stranger, for no other reason than to see them happy. The world needs more people like you! Your Mom and Dad raised a wonderful, caring and compassionate son! But I'm sure they know that!

Today I took Chynna in to be euthanized. It was finally her time. She was in end stage renal failure and severely hyperthyroid. And despite giving her medication her health has been on the decline. She was still a loving kitty. She still peed, pooped and drank, but she hardly ate anymore. Each day I could see her getting thinner and weaker and the last week she started to throw up a few times a day again. I decided that it was now the right time to let her go while she still had her kitty dignity and some quality of life.

Thank you again for giving us more than 2 extra years together. You will forever be a bright spot in my life.

*hugs*

Linda

I'm so very sorry for your loss. I wish I had the words to express how I felt after reading this thread. However, I suppose the only words I need to share are those that let you know that we are all here for you while you mourn for your precious Chynna.

Your post touched my heart. How brave and strong you were -- how much courage you showed...I can't imagine your pain right now. I know, in your heart, you know that you did for Chynna what you promised her so many years ago -- that you wouldn't let her suffer and allow her to pass while she still had her dignity. And, I hope, despite the pain you feel due to your loss, that you know that Chynna is thanking you for being there for her from the beginning until the end. It is never easy to lose a loved one, but know that Chynna is never really gone -- she will continue to live on through your memories, your heart, and your mind. She was a special girl, indeed. And, you loved and honored her as such. May you find peace during this difficult time...

Dear, sweet Chynna, rest well. You were a beautiful girl in life and your spirit shines brightly now that you're gone. It is apparent that you touched so many lives during your life. You deserve the serene beauty of heaven. Play happily over the bridge, Chynna, and rest assured that you will never be forgotten.

Linda, my heart goes out to you right now sweetie You've had soo much on your plate lately, and I know this was a heartbreaking decision for you Like we talked about yesterday though, I really do think that you made the most selfless and loving decision for your sweet girl by not letting her suffer. You gave her a wonderfully loving home for years and years and she was one lucky girl to have you in her life (just as you were lucky to have her in yours)

You have my number if you need to talk You're in my prayers right now
