best cat pee cleaner?

I am having some issues...we have two female cats (one is ours, one a stray) that are indoor cats and not spayed yet. They are healthy, and we are hoping to get them both spayed within the next month. They are peeing on EVERYTHING. It had gotten better for awhile....they started a couple months ago by peeing on our comforter each day. It got to bad, we started putting the comforter and sheets in the closet during the day, and they don't pee on the actual fitted sheet on the bed, just the comforter. WEIRD...i dont get it!.
We use feliway, all over the house. We clean the comforters by washing twice and than drying to try to get all the pee smell out. We use Simple Green to clean the pee stain, and our carpet cleaners upholstery attachment for our bed/couches (we cover our couch with a shower curtain at night, bc they pee on it if not)
I cannot get the pee smell out. I am afraid our couch is ruined. The cushions from the inside don't come out, but I clean it once a week at least.
Two nights ago, we left the comforter next to the bed because it was too hot to use when we went to bed but we knew we would need it soon. They peed on it before we could use it. Last night, they peed on the bed, TWO TIMES in the same night. Different places..we got up, changed the sheets and comforter etc, at midnight. At 330am, they did it again. We had to change everything again, and sleep our last hour with little fleece blankets as our blanket because all 3 of our comforters/blankets were peed on.
I have read that spaying them can help this...I also worry they are acting out because of Billy, but these cats basically live in our guest room so I don't know how this has affected them much at all.
I am looking for recommendations on cleaning supplies!!! Something to get pee smell out of carpets, couches, comforters, etc. Anything you have tried that works, please let me know.

I'm sure someone more expert will be along, but I think you need to try some of the oxy enzyme cleaners where possible. Also, I've had great luck with a product called Zero Odor - it's not a stain remover, but does wonders with odor remover. You can get it at Bed Bath & Beyond, and also on line - it's a little pricey, but for me it worked. Also BB&B has a great return policy if need be.

Also, I suggest you get the spaying and neutering done ASAP. Check the internet and local pet control and shelters, and your own vet, for discounts on neutering, since you've got a bunch there!

Also, I'd ask the females be checked by the vet for UTI's or other health issues if you haven't done that, and where are the litter boxes? How many do you have, (usually the suggestion is one per cat plus one extra in various locations - if they're all lined up together kitty thinks they're just one big box). I also had luck with a litter called Cat Attract - I swear by it (my boy had box issues). Cleaning boxes twice a day is always good, too.

And, this may sound silly, make sure you're telling the resident cats (the girls) that the kittens are there for them, that the girls are your #1 loves and they're not being replaced, play and feed them first, greet them first, the whole deal. Even if the kittens aren't in their faces, they know the boys are there and it may be changing their feeling of security at home.

Good luck - you and your family are angels for sticking with the cats and working to resolve the issues.

Hi Frank. Whenever this question's asked, this product is usually mentioned at least once, but more than once is more common and with glowing reviews. http://www.nokout.com/ Just now I checkout out the website. There are so many choices ---hopefully folks here can add details to help you sort it out. I've never tried it.

We have 4 litterboxes in the house, and they are scooped twice a day. We have a low cost clinic nearby and are hoping to be able to afford to get them all done within a month...we are budgeting for our vet care and saving up money to get them each done. I clean the carpets once a week but its a steam cleaner that is not doing a great job anymore. I saw a commercial for Rug Doctor, and they rent them out at local stores around here, so I am hoping to rent one soon. They also sell a pet odor/stain pretreating that has gotten some good reviews. I am hoping that helps with carpets a little.
I think the girls are a little in shock. We have had them checked for UTI issues, and they are fine. We got a boy kitten about 8 weeks ago, and they didn't have many problems...and then we ended up unexpectedly adopting an 11 week old blind kitty last week. We had to block off our living room at night and parts of the day so the blind kitten can get used to one room at a time, and I think this has affected the girls. We have also been spending more time with the new kitten to get him used to the house. We will definitely make sure to spend some "alone" time with the girls each day so they don't feel left out.
We used to use clay non scoop-able litter, and I convinced my husband to switch to soft scoop-able after one of the girls started having issues with the clay litter. With my scooping twice a day the litter box is usually really clean... I am at a loss, I just can't imagine another night like last. We are going to spray some more feliway on the bed tonight and see how it goes.
I went to the nokout website, since I saw it in another post...but there are so many options, I didn't know which one people were referring to. So if anyone has any ideas, please let me know!! I want to try it on my couch as one last effort before we have to throw it away and sit on the floor. I can't even have people over to sit on the couch, and I use my upholstery attachment once a week to try and scrub down the couch and it is just not getting it enough!

Oh my I feel for you. With 10 cats in the house, we have set backs whenever one of them gets sick and the others respond to their illness.

I've quit using everything but Nok Out. It will work on couch cushions, carpets, walls, wood items, and everything else. Normal household cleaners will not neutralize the odors and you need to get something that will break down the enzymes in the pee.

For your couch - saturate the area completely and use a brush to push it into the fibers. And when I say saturate, I mean pour enough on the spot to go thru the cushions. You can't just clean the surface. If it's really bad you may need to do this a couple of times.

For your bed, use it on the bed itself as the urine probably hit your mattress. Then buy a plastic liner and put it under your mattress pad. I don't know why they like to go on comforters, but I've found that if mine is bunched up, they will go on it and when it's flattened out on the bed they won't. Same if it happens to land on the floor. We religiously make our bed each day to avoid this.

Buy the 2 gallon jug of Nok Out until you get this behind you. It's pricey, but it is a lot cheaper than replacing furniture or your mattress. I use this. For flat surfaces that they've peed on I pour it on full strength. I also mix it 50/50 with water in a spray bottle to use on vertical surfaces, and also use it as a general freshener (like some people use febreeze).

Then address your litter boxes. Look into Cat Attract litter to draw them to the boxes. My alpha cat liked to use the bathroom sink to pee in for years (he has a chronic auto-immune disease) and once I switched over to Cat Attract, he started using the litter box again after using the sink for 10 years. It's not always a matter of having enough boxes or keeping them clean enough. Sometimes they just don't like the litter that you use.

Good luck! You can get through this!!

My shelter recommended the Rug Doctor too - and just using plain old water in it. I was fortunate - although my boy had some issues, it was always on the floor, to the best of my knowledge, and a comibnation of oxy cleaners, Rug Doctor, cat attract litter, and Feliway seemed to help a lot. When he developed crystals, once I had him on prescription food and he got through his meds, we've been ok.

Yup, we use Nok Out. It doesn't matter which one you order, actually. There was just the original one with the green label when I started purchasing it.

But Amy's right - for couch and mattresses, you MUST THOROUGHLY soak the cusions and the affected area of a mattress. We have a microfiber couch, and I had to pour REALLY slowly (I actually used the sprayer and just kept spraying until my hand hurt). Cat pee does wick down into the cushion - and the only way an enzyme cleaner will work is if it reaches ALL the places the pee went - so you really have to use a lot to make sure you got the Nok Out to soak down into all the places the cat pee could have gone. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes - then blot up what you can. It would take three or four days for the couch cushion to dry, and that's when it wasn't humid. It almost always took a second application, because when pee is down in the cushion, it's just hard to get to the right places. But you MUST let it air dry, that's how it works.

We would lay a strip of aluminum foil over the couch cushions, and put a throw blanket on it so we could sit on the couch while it was drying from the Nok Out.

Same with a mattress - we would put folded towels down over wherever we had to spray the Nok Out and make the bed over that - and change the towels (not the bedding) each evening. It would usually take at least a few days for the mattress to dry, and almost always required a second application.

You can also add Nok Out to your wash instead of bleach - that'll work for the clothes or bedding or blankets or whatever.

We don't bother with anything else either - and now we use it for a lot of household cleaning as well.

But when it comes to cat pee, we use it full strength. We even spray a light coating on the litter when we scoop. It dries quickly and freshens it up.

Thanks! We are definitely going to try it!
But...darn you for telling me how to cover it so we can sit on it!!

We have used some cleaners on the couch, and our upholstery attachment and I put a fan near to dry it faster...and always tell my husband he is NOT allowed to sit on it while it is drying because it makes the small not air out like it is supposed too. He always covers the couch with a blanket and says it is fine...and I finally convinced him not to sit on it anymore until dry and that when we thoroughly soak the couch we would just sit on the floor til it dried...and I read your post out loud so now he knows how to cover it so we can sit on it LOL
Thanks for all the tips everyone. We have sprayed and sprayed and sprayed the couch off, and scrubbed it so much, but we are going to pour the stuff down instead of using a sprayer to hope it soaks the cushions. We have a microfiber also, and cleaning it is rough.

Yeah, the microfiber makes it hard to get the stuff down INTO it. Of course, the cat pee can pool along the trim and has time to soak in there - so you have to do the same with the Nok Out.

Good luck!

Oh - I will add - we do remove the throw blanket when we're not using the couch. We did leave the aluminum foil down until it was dry, but that was to prevent Spooky from wanting to pee on it again.

...and sorry 'bout the how to use the couch instructions!
