B.C. SPCA constables have rescued 25 terrier and shepherd type dogs and 21 cats from a couple in Vanderhoof.

The sick and neglected animals are now in the care of the Prince George and Vernon branches of the SPCA.

“We do have a history with these particular individuals,†said B.C. SPCA special constable Debbie Goodine, who led the investigation. “When we attempted to inspect their property early this month to check on their animals we were denied access so we obtained a search warrant.â€

SPCA officers executed the warrant on June 23, according to a recent news release. The officers discovered a large number of malnourished dogs and cats in poor body condition and suffering from numerous untreated injuries, internal parasites and other health issues.

“The dogs were contained in four outdoor pens constructed of logs in a vertical position which posed a risk of injury or death to the animals,†said Goodine. “They were obviously malnourished and did not have adequate water or shelter.â€

Goodine said the pens were filled with feces and pack aggression was evident during the warrant due to overcrowding in the pens.

“The cats were also in distress, kept in an outbuilding with no ventilation,†said Goodine. “There were extremely high levels of ammonia from the urine and the sick malnourished cats were infested with parasites.â€

The animals are currently receiving ongoing care and veterinary treatment in SPCA custody. Charges of animal cruelty are pending in the case.

I wish they would publish their names.
I have a few things I would like to say to them

It's a relief though that the animals were rescued.

What I can't understand is if this couple already has a history abusing animals how come they got away with collecting 40+ animals before getting caught?

i really hate what people can do, they should have had all the animals taken away sooner especially with them already known to the spca

I don't think it starts out that way? They probably start with two or three animals, but then more strays appear, so they take them in, and, of course, they don't bother to spay or neuter, so then there are puppies and kittens. Before they know it, it's completely out of control. I think most (most) people have the best of intentions, but they get in so far over their heads and then it's just too late. And rather than try to do anything about it (because they know they're in big trouble by that point), they just continue on the same path. Meanwhile, it's the animals who truly suffer.

That's just my opinion. Maybe I over-think things.

I just don't understand why people do what they do

I just read an an article in New Jersey about an animal control officer who left four cats inside a plastic bin for 33 hours. They're weak, have dull eyes, and are in shock.

People are horrible.

If it were up to me, that's one animal control officer who would be looking for a new job!

This reminds me of a news story I heard last week. People at a Motel 6 started complaining about a stench coming from one of the rooms. Apparently there was a long-term 'renter' living there with a couple dozen cats. She had a tarp on the floor, had poured cat litter on the tarp, and the entire room was a litter box. UGH! I'm sure she had the best of intentions, but seriously. Yes, she had rescued strays from the streets, but how much better off were they?

People that abuse/neglect animals should receive the same treatment that the animals received.

She probably thought she was being innovative with that tarp on the floor.

I have the same theory as you do. I've heard it repeated on TV (the show "Animal Cops" I think it was) too I think.

Tara: I hope that employee is fired and blacklisted! Municipal worker I'm guessing
I've heard of folks not caring about their job -But this - This is ugh I don't even know what to say!

Yes it was on the news last night and it was terrible. They showed the poor kits and don't know if all will survive. I was crying while watching this, I just hate people sometimes. I'd like to see how long this criminal would last tied in a plastic garbage bag in the heat we are having, that would teach him a lesson.
