I picked up my adopted kitten from the shelter yesterday. Unfortunately they couldn't neuter him because he developed an upper respitory infection. Poor guy is sneezing and really stuffed up. I have three other cats and I am worried they will get sick too. New kitten is confined in a seperate room of course and we will keep him there until he is fully recovered. What are my chances of the other kitties not getting infected? Has anybody else adopted a sick kittie with URI in a multicat household and was able to keep the others healthy? And how did you manage to do this? TIA.

depends alot on the other cats health/general condition of getting sick easily or not. I have been pretty lucky with my cats not getting sick often at all and even if a few sneeze I try to take them out asap and place in a upstairs bedroom to keep them seperated. I have 25 adults and 9 kittens at the moment and was worried a bit about the kittens all getting eye issues(terramycin on hand lol) but alls been ok. try to keep the fresh air coming in. We have ac only in our bedroom all the other rooms have window fans/house fan at times to pull in air

URI is highly contageous but that doesn't mean your other kitties will get it. Make sure you wash your hands VERY well after handling the new baby, and yes, keep him seperate.

I take in a LOT of fosters from the shelter as well as ferals and a lot of times they come with URI. I have all of my kitties on L-Lysine which I just mix into their food, so I never have any problems with my babies getting sick. It is a suppliment that I buy in capsule form which surpresses the virus. Works wonders!
Good luck!

In addition to what's been posted, know that sometimes the stress of having a new kitty in the home, even if the cat is confined to a single room, will cause one of your others to get sick. To help alleviate stress, get some Feliway diffusers and plug them in.

How's the little sickie doing? Make sure s/he stays hydrated, keeps eating, and using the box properly.
