I talk to my lovely two year old black cat as if he knows exactly what I am saying. I never leave the house without saying something like, "Cappy, I'm going shopping, I'll be back in an hour and you be good when I'm gone." And then when I'm home I give him a snuggle and say, 'Were you a good boy when I was gone?"

Well, yesterday my husband wasn't feeling well. He lay down on the bed for a nap, while Cappy was upstairs with me. At one point in the afternoon I turned to Cappy and said, "Daddy's not feeling well. He's down sleeping on the bed. I know he would love it if you went downstairs to be with him for a while."

Cappy looked at me for a minute, and then turned and scampered down to the bedroom where he slept on the bed with my husband.

Now - it could have been 'coincidence', but I swear, our smart cat knows exactly what I'm talking about!

Yes indeed, he knew! I agree that cats understand way more than people realize. And the more you talk to them, the more they understand. OH yes!

Hope your husband is feeling better.

Do you say bed or bedroom to him often? Such as "Let's go to bed" or "time for bed" ?

My cats understand what bed and bedroom means. If they're being good I can tell them bedroom and they'll all go back there.

My cats understand "treats - downstairs". That's where they get their crunchy and chicken treats. Prowler usually answers me and runs out ahead and thunders down the stairs, flops on the livingroom floor to wait for his snack.

That is SO cute!! I do the same thing with Holland... if I am leaving the house I tell her when I'll be back, and I always say "be a good girl, I love you!"

Holland definitely knows "treat" "hungry" and "eat". When it's time for her to be fed, I ask her "are you hungry? Do you want to eat?" - and she always answers me with a meow that (to me
) sounds like "yes!". I say "you are? Let's go get your food!". Of course, then she has to watch and make sure I put the food on the plate and put it where it belongs...
I swear one of these days I am going to trip over her and hurt myself. After I put her food on her plate she walks RIGHT in front of me, looking over her shoulder every half second to make sure I know what I'm doing, and basically leads me to her food mat.

I'm such a dork.

How cute!

Cappy knows a few words. Our bedroom is downstairs from the main floor and living room, and when it's time to go to bed, we say, 'Time to go to bed. Let's go downstairs to bed.' And he trots along with us where he sleeps with us all night.

He knows 'food' and 'treat' and 'supper'. Cats are smart.

I tell my inside cats that I am going somewhere, be home in a couple of hours. If i get back sooner than the estimated time, they are no where to be seen. If I am close, they are waiting and if late, they are glaring out the window at me. They also know if I say going to the field in harvest that I can be anywhere from 10 minutes to 10 hours an never are waiting anxiously. They also know supper, treats, bed, barn, and many other words. NOW if I could only teach them what 'Get out of the way' means

^ My cats will hear the vehicle pulling up and the door being opened. I've watched them when DH comes home early. They'll be asleep in the bedroom, hear his truck - perk up, and when they hear the back door open half of them go running to meet him.

I talk to my cats (and dogs) as if they can understand me, too. They often surprise me by showing just how much they do understand! Just today, I told my 6 week old kitten that he needed a bath, and he immediately started washing his face. Could be a coincidence, but I'm not at all sure. He doesn't like when I wash him, so I think he decided to do it himself.

I swear, whenever I tell Holland it's time to clip her nails (or if she sees the nail clippers), she is all of a sudden nowhere to be found!

I'm watching my brother's dog Mallie right now, and he texted me yesterday to say "Tell Mallie I love her! Or whatever, she's a dog and doesn't understand English very well." But I know my brother, and he is absolutely in LOVE with that dog. I think he added the last part to appear "macho"...
I know he talks to Mallie the same way I talk to Holland...

My cats know "Are you hungry?!"(time to eat!!), "Good night" (wich means they have to go in their room for the night as we don't sleep with them), "kiss" (they will rub their face against mine) and luckily they also understand the word "no", although they sometimes pretend they don't.

I honestly think that your cat knew precisely what you were talking about. I truly believe that cats are a lot smarter than people give them credit for. As far as "kitty nurses" (that's what I call a cat that will "tend" to a sick owner) goes, Precious will often come up to me when I am not feeling good so that I can pet her and I believe she does this because she knows I am not feeling well and she knows that she has a calming effect on me. I love having Precious at my "kitty nurse".

When my husband D. tells me in the study that we can give the cats a treat of canned food later on, we often find Mimosa in the living room, tap-tap-tapping the door of the closet where we keep the wet food. Yes, she knows

Flynn is my kitty nurse. When I am sick he will not leave my side, sleeping against me. But when he hears a sound outside he will fly out of bed and sit growling on the windowsill at whoever is passing under our window.
It always amazes me a bit because usually he will only be with me when D. is at work. Flynn adores D. and will be stuck to him when he is home. But not when I'm sick

Such a sweet story. I talk to Bella all the time--even though she can't hear me. If she's looking at me there are a few Sign language gestures I can make that she understands, along with my facial expressions. I think cats are VERY smart and intuitive.
