So Lola my 8 week old feral rescue has started growling when eating. She doesn't growl when she gets her regular food but growls when she gets something yummy. I gave her half a moist 'pounce' cat treat the other day and she seemed to really like it but was growling and making some strange noises while eating. Today I made myself a tuna sandwich and gave some to all the cats including Lola. She gobbled it up but made the same growling noises. The first time the other cats were in a different room and she seemed to be growling at me. With the tuna the other cats were present but not close to her and were enjoying their own tuna. Why is she growling? I have never had a cat do this.....

Sooty does this especially when its something he really likes i think its just his way of warning Flash she wont be getting any of what he is eating

Jack growled a couple of times with his wet food. I had to stop the wet food for a while because he was bringing it back up, so when i introduced it to all three of them again that's when i heard him.

Rosie and Sophie stopped eating to look at him
But i think it's like Ashley said, he loved it and was giving them both a warning not to touch his

You know, if Lola is as tame as you say she is, she doesn't count as a feral right?

And that's normal for kittens. She probably does have siblings as that's one thing that will make kittens growl like that. Having gone without food, like stray cats do, will cause it, too.

Perhaps feral isn't the right word. I just thought the growling might have something to do with her having been born outside without human contact. My other two have never growled over food so I wasn't sure...

She is quite tame minus the growling over food and her love of attacking my face when I sleep. I actually find the growling cute. It isn't like a deep cat growl but sounds like something you would expect to hear from an angry squirrel....

Thanks for the replies.

Its pretty common if the kitten was from a larger litter. I've witnessed it when you shred boiled chicken up for kittens that are 8 weeks old and put it on a plate. My rex kittens used to growl like crazy - and put one paw on each piece will having a 3rd bite (growling the whole time) in their little mouths.
