Hi!

I have a question for any of the TCS gardeners....I live in a small second floor apartment (but i Have a balcony or porch since it is garden style) and my sister offered me one of her cherry tomato plants (since they are taking over her garden) I said yes! SInce I have nothing green and I love the idea of having a veggie garden but...any advice on how to properly care for this plant once i bring it home? (I am seeing her on Friday)

Oh, that's nice! Tomatoes like sun, so move the pot around on the porch to follow the sun during the day. Don't let the soil dry out, but don't drown her either. Show us a picture when you get it!

Cherry tomatoes are very prolific. You may need to stake the plant up as it grows larger. I think you'll be very happy with your crop.

If you can get a 5 gallon pail plant it in there but try to punch some holes in the bottom of the pail. A hammer and nail and some elbow grease will do. It needs some drainage holes. Fill pail with potting soil not garden soil. The tomato plant can be planted quite deep if the plant is leggy as it will form roots along the stem. Plan on some sort of plant support as cherry tomato plants can get quite large, though you can do some pruning on the plant to keep the growth in control. Get some plant food too that can either be mixed in the soil or mixed with water and applied to foliage when watering.

Have fun!

How fun! I have nothing new to add to the advice you already have, but just wanted to wish you good luck with your tomato plant!

THank you all for the wonderful advice!

I have ONE more question...mom suggested this to me and I was wondering if it was feasbile.

She suggested putting hte plant into a hanging basket and hanging it in my windows since my living room is super sunny and I am looking for a hanging plant to put there.

I thought that would be awesome but just wanted to see if that was even possible.

DH is super exicted about the tomato plant since he LOVES gardening and we walk around garden centers and plants stores of all types on our days off dreaming of the day we have a green house.

He thought the idea was cool but also isn't sure if it will work.

We both love gardening but never tried veggies and DH hasn't been able to garden since he left the mid-west 6 years ago.

Tomato foliage is toxic to cats. Most cats won't nibble on it, but I'm not sure I'd want to take the chance of having them indoors.
