Also from today's Supreme Court

The Christian group isn't forbidden or banned from doing anything it wants. However, if they want to receive recognition and funding from the University, they have to obey the University's rules regarding discrimination.

Court: Christian group can't bar gays and get funding

That is a good ruling, no group should discriminate.

No doubt. The Court has been surprising me a lot lately. Just like the ruling on the Mojave cross, that was a good ruling. They looked at the case entirely under the view of why the old horse soldiers put in there in the first place, and not what everyone today thinks it should mean.

The "Golden Rule."

"He who has the gold, makes the rules."

Now...I'm going to assume that that rule will apply to every club that meets on campus. If it wants to get part of the students' activity fees, it has to abide by all University rules.

From what I've read thus far, that rule has been applying to every club that meets on campus, for quite some time. The groups lawyers insisted that others were not abiding by the rule, but for some reason wasn't able to name any of them.

My mistake. It appears that the Supreme Court only addressed that the University's rule of not recognizing or funding discriminatory groups is legal. They did not address the accusation that it's being enforced selectively, they sent that back to a lower court.

I'll bet if you gave me a week on the campus, I could find several. It's pretty easy. Read the rulebook applying to on-campus organizations, and visit a few of them.

I have some experience in the field, as a student officer at a university some years ago. I found no one followed all the rules. There was always something.

Yes. As a straight male, try to walk into the campus gay/lesbian club, for example. Or the African-American Club. And many others. Most such clubs regard themselves as exclusively for their target group and resent any intrusions by others, naturally enough.

By the way...I was a member of the Afro-American Club at our university and actually went on their grand field trip to New Orleans. Drove my van full of members, in fact.

Just think of all the money the University can save by de-funding all the groups that other groups narc out for not following all the rules.

Really? I attended the "Girls and Guitars" Summer Solstice Bash and Cookout at a lesbian bistro and was treated like family. As you sure it's not just your own perception getting in the way?

Exactly what I mean. Anyone can be part of any club.

Did you read my message? Do you think I'm African American?

Does it make a difference?

I'm being serious, I see it all the time. Quite often the "exclusion" of other groups is because of the discomfort of the other groups being there. Like straight people in clubs considered Gay. The cringing when anyone tries to talk to them, being bumped into at the bar, even people standing too close...it's "they're hitting on me".

Yet, if no one says anything at all to them, it's "they don't like me, they don't want me here".

The difference here being, that "we don't want them here" was written into the rules, and that's where the line is drawn.

I was once sneered at when I walked into my college's Anime Club. Granted, I was one of three females there, but I did NOT feel included. Guess I shouldn't have left my pocket protector at home.

All kidding aside, I think this is a great ruling and SHAME on that club for thinking it was RIGHT for excluding homosexuals from their group.
