Autumn has had this for quite a long time and since I have not been able to get her to the vet, she is impossible, I wonder if anyone has had this problem with their kitty. I can't seem to find anything written about it. She acts and plays normally and this doesn't seem to effect her so I'm just wondering what is causing this. Any idea's or somewhere for me to find more info.

When cat eye discharge starts to dry it turns red. Are you sure this isn't want you see?
What else is going on with this? Is there a lot of tearing, do her eyes ever look irritated, any upper respiratory symptoms (occasional sneeze), or does she rub them a lot?

It could possibly be herpes, it could also be allergies or that she's very sensitive to things you're using in the home.
One can't actually be allergic to chemicals since there's no protein, but for those who are sensitive it makes the immune system more sensitized and allergies to actual allergens worse. Unfortunately we all have allergens in our homes.
I have kitty that has issues with dust (dust mite poop to be exact).
All you can do is consult the vet. Maybe chat with them first and see what can be done to avoid bringing her in or make it where you only have to take her in once. If you use anything strongly scented, even scented litter, you can slowly try getting rid of those items to see if they're irritating her.

A few of my cats have that.
Cleo got antibiotics and eye meds and it went away.
Wrinkles has it all the time and all her tests are neg.
I would call the vet and have them see the cat.

If I have to give Autumn any kind of meds, I am in trouble. She won't even let me brush her and she runs when I walk up to her. She has been very timid since I adopted her a year and a half ago. That's why I'm having so much trouble getting her to the vet, I already had to cancel 3 appointments because I couldn't catch her. I will keep trying tho since she really needs to see the vet. Thanks for your help.

mews2much - I've been wondering this for a while, do sphynx have any little hairs around their eyes to serve as eye lashes? Tomas, though a DSH, has short little eye lash fur and seems to have more trouble with getting stray hairs in his eyes.

She most certainly could have caught herpes at a shelter. The stress of being there would have been terrible on her immune system, too.
I think they can test eye goo if you can get a sample. You could always call and ask if you could get a sterile vial and q-tip (or whatever they prefer to take the sample with) and see if that would work. Then sneak up on a sleeping Autumn...
Have you read though anything on taming ferals, yet? You could find some helpful information that might help you make more progress with Autumn.

Wellington has always had teary eyes, and eventually they got infected. It was discovered under sedation that he has no tear duct on the left side, and the right one is impeded. The infection needed antibiotic ointment and now I have to wash his eyes out every day with optrix solution to prevent build-up. This is quite a common condition, I understand, though how you treat it in a cat that won't be caught, I have no idea!

If she comes to you, you could get a sample.. you'd just have to always be ready.
If it was herpes you wouldn't have to directly dose her, it would go in her food and/or water, or in treat form.
See the recent threads on that.
I have a semi feral outside who's really iffy on contact. He's been good since the weather got really hot, for some reason that takes the fight out of him and I can walk right up to him now. During the cooler months he runs. Even getting some Revolution on him takes two people, begging, eventually cornering him, and DH has to hold him while I apply it .
I also have another feral born kitten that has issues with me approaching her. She often runs, unless she's hungry - then she rubs all over my legs.
My guess would be that Autumn could have been feral born and then not properly socialized with enough people as she grew up. It makes for a very skittish kitty but one that still loves their chosen human.

To answer the question my sphynx do not have eye lashes and yes things get in there eyes easy.
If it is herpes you can put L-Lysine in the food.
My Meeko with herpes gets the red discharge also.
I hope you can catch her and get to the vet.

From what the shelter told me, Autumn had a home but when the woman got pregnant they gave up the cat. So she did have a home but what kind and how Autumn was treated is something I will never know.

On completely 100% indoor cats, you know they're not getting into anything dirty.Good luck on getting her to the appointment.
Whenever I need to catch Tanna for a vet visit I make sure to shut the bedroom door so she can't run under the bed. I still have a struggle with her because she doesn't really like being carried.
