litter transition

Thread Starter
I was wondering at what age a kitten can be transitioned from non-clumping to clumping litter? I have a 10 week old and a 13 week old and the 10 week old, Sugar, is trying to climb into the big kitty litter box [which has clumping litter] and pee in there. We watched her so she could go since she was in the process. She didn't try to eat it or anything but I know I was advised not to use clumping litter for the little ones when I first litter trained them. Thanks in advance!

My kittens are almost 8 weeks old and they have been using the "big" litter boxes for at least a week now. I use 18 gal. tote boxes because a couple of my older cats tend to throw alot of litter out of regular litter boxes. The kittens just started using them on their own. I still have a smaller litter box for them with the non-clumping litter. I haven't seen them trying to eat the litter since the first week I introduced it to them.

If any litter gets stuck between their toes or to their fur it can be ingested while cleaning themselves, it's not necessarily they go into the box and eat the litter.

I won't use clumping on cats of any age, but if you choose to I would wait until at least 4-5 months of age.

Mine started using it at about 8 weeks. No problems with litter sticking to their feet. Just make sure you keep plenty in there.

Check their feet from time to time. If you hear a "clicking" sound when they walk, it could be clumped litter between their toes.

Just be an aware mom. I know you already are.
