Is it just me, or does this annoy anyone else?

Phone rings. You answer it and there is a recording saying someone will be with you in a minute. They put you on hold, not telling you who is calling. If you decide to see what this is about, a snooty voice asks for you by your first name.
I am of the opinion that if someone is calling to conduct business, they should ask for you in a business like manner, such as Mr or Ms _______. Am I being silly or uptight?

Me too. I don't even wait for them to come on the link. I have caller ID, and I'm not ashamed to admit that there are many calls I don't answer. I don't answer the door either unless I am expecting someone or unless I recognize the person through the peephole! I don't need another magazine or box of candy.

I get those at work every so often. I hang up, period. If you are going to call ME then you'd better have a person there to speak with me and KNOW WHO YOU ARE CALLING! Put me on hold when I call you. I understand that (to a point, people). I am not waiting on hold when you call me!

True. I just hang up. I refuse to be put on hold when someone is calling me!

I just hang up, too, I have other things to do with my time than sit on the phone with no one saying anything.

Most times I just hang up. If I'm in a feisty mood, I'll wait until they get on the line then ask them to hang on for a minute. I put the phone down and walk away for a couple of minutes then come back and pick up the phone to see if they are still on. I figure I've wasted more of their time than they did of mine.

Hey, if they think they can make you wait for them, it's expected that they wait for you even longer.

If I were a Presidential advisor (or advisor to any one else like that), and if I got a call like that, I'd hold on for him, since that's the way they work.

Anyone else, I hang up on.

I never answer my phone. Ever. If you want to talk to me you have to talk to my machine first.
Or better yet, send me an e mail.

<edit> there is one exception: if my vet calls.

I think it's rude and wouldn't bother with them.
I''m like Otto although I will answer the phone for friends.

Ah, yes, voicemail, the invention that now allows more people to do less work than any other since the invention of the office coffee machine.

I don't have voice mail, I have your standard answering machine attached to my phone, with a little tape inside.

But.....what does work have to do with it?

I don't get it Mike. ???????????????

Actually, when it comes to work, I find VM extremely helpful. That way we can communicate (& be communicated with) even when we're busy with something else or on conference calls, and we don't actually have to have time "match up" to speak to someone in order to give them info they need, or get instructions, or figure out deadlines - or a million different things. When a big part of your job IS communicating, not "doing" something per se, VM is an incredible tool.

I recently got caller ID and I love it. I would not answer this call at all but I never received a call like the one you mentioned here. I get calls from different vendors and now I know who is calling before I pick up so I just let the answering machine get it.

I pick up for friends of course and I have my sister and Russell on specific songs which play when they call so I know who it is instantly. I really love caller ID, I already had call waiting and it's great to have both.

My family, friends and work have my cell number, so I always let the answerphone pick up calls on the home phone. And, 99% of the time, they don't leave a message, so I'm guessing it's marketers.
