McChrystal resigned before Barack could fire him.

IMO the sad thing (while its wrong to put such statements in a national magazine), its another way to silence those that disagree with what ever Obama does or says.

If you disagree on anything, you are punished by the WH and Obama! Its either what he says or does or its over. His way or the highway. Obama really doesn't care about America - he's selling us down the river with no paddle and standing at the top laughing.

I was watching a show yesterday where they were interviewing a couple other retired generals and they both agreed that McChrystal deserved to be fired for his comments. I have to agree. Perhaps Obama chose to let him "resign" to save face (McChrystal not Obama )

I'm no fan of Obama but what McChrystal did was out of line. There's a right way and a wrong way to do things in the military. McChrystal did it the wrong way. To be honest, I would have relieved him from command too.

General Petraus taking over command in Afghanistan is something I can applaud. He did a fabulous job in Iraq, and he knows how to get results.

"Let" him resign?
General McChrystal wrote his letter of resignation yesterday. I don't think Obama "let" him do anything.

Let's just say that I believe he was aware that his resignation was expected.

The President isn't required to accept a resignation. If Obama accepted his resignation, then yes, he "let" him resign.

By "resign", do we mean "retire"?

Actually, not necessarily. Commissioned officers can "submit the letter" at any time. At least, in the USMC of the 1980's they could. I'm not so sure how that works during active Military operations.
