This is why I got a bird feeder

I thought long & hard before investing in a bird feeder, as I have outdoor cats. I finally got a finch feeder, and installed it on the deck. The only cats who will come that close to the house are the ones who will not catch a bird (too much effort involved when food is always provided - although I bet if a bird flew in their mouth they'd eat it
).

Anyways - here are my pretty finches, and their "adoring fans"!

Nice! The cats look entertained, for sure!

I have what may be a dumb question- what is that cylinder thing with the lines and numbers on it to the right of the bird feeder? There's one in the back of the yard of the house we're in escrow on, and BF and I both didn't know what it was.
We thought a rain measurer or something, but... why have that in SoCal when it hardly rains??

You are correct - it is a rain gauge. One for old people's eyes, with big numbers on it & all.

I love Molly's heart shape on her rump.

Nothing quite as handsome as a male goldfinch in full color.

I have a feeder to keep Ari happy. And I enjoy birdwatching myself. Some of the house finches and titmice are starting to bring fledglings to the feeder.

Just wish the local raccoon would stop raiding it at night.

Adorable!

I really thought about getting a bird feeder, but I've seen Mya trying to catch one too many times!! She was always foiled by the over excited Hef, but a bird feeder might make it a little too easy for her!

ENGLAND... LAND OF HOPE AND GLORY!
Nat i know exactly what you mean because my 3 are the same with ours.

I've just bought another feeder that holds 3 baskets for fat balls, and a tray that holds seed, and the amount of birds using it now is unbelievable!. The kids (and me!) are well entertained!

I have a couple of feeders - one for nyjer thistle and one that I put safflower seed in. If I use black oil sunflower... the squirrels just gobble it up.

So I get American GFs, house finches and cardinals, mostly.

I had been setting out suet cakes or seed cakes, but the local big ole fatty-butt raccoon took about two seconds to figure out how to get it down and open the suet box. Grrrr!!!

I am upset about this b/c the titmice, nuthatches and small woodpeckers really like the boxes.

Back to the thread tho' - my boys love Cat TV. Squirrels, birds and I have chipmunks in my courtyard. EEeep! That makes them go crazy.

Yep. I know how you feel. I am putting out less seed because of the raccoon.

I have a couple of bird feeders around my house. The one that sits on a pole has a raccoon guard on it which also protects it from cats. The rest hang up high in the air off of the gutters or on tree branches that are too thin for cats to climb down.
