So are cats cleaner?

I've seen it mentioned in several places that Muhammad actually lived with a pet cat; but I've no idea how true that actually is.

They don't even have a clue about spay/neuter.
In Iraq during Sadaam's time they had nightly dog culls. Armed guys would go out and shoot as may dogs as they could.

That stopped when we invaded and now the dog problem is bad and they have a full scale canine massacre going on now. Killing dogs by the thousands.

It is pathetic. I was under the impression Muslims went by the first five books of the Old Testament, the law of Moses and as such would treat animals better than they do.

By the Old Testament, dogs are "unclean." Just touching one makes a devout Jew "unclean" for the rest of the day, and touching a dead one makes him unclean for a week, if I remember correctly. The same as a pig, by the way.

It's the saliva that makes a dog unclean. Dogs eat carrion along with other nasty things and lick themselves in places that are full of bacteria so unless you have hand sanitizer nearby you might want to avoid touching dogs.

Did any of you read the comments on that link? I thought the one about how it was believed that the dogs spread plague in westerners was rather interesting. Outlandish superstitions exist in all religions..

I already knew about the pigs and trichinosis bit. Again a superstition formed when there was a logical cause - though they couldn't have known it back then.

Actually, dogs are just defined as "unclean" by levitical law. All animals are divided into "clean" and "unclean" by certain physical characteristics. It turns out those characteristics are related to eating habits, etc. The idea was to avoid animals that were scavengers.

I'm not sure why it worked out that way, really.

The law for animals was that to be clean, it had to have a split hoof and chew a cud. That made cows, sheep, goats, and camels clean, but not pigs, cats, dogs, rabbits, horses, etc.

For water creatures, they have to have both fins and scales. So that eliminates all shellfish, catfish, sharks, etc.

By the basic reasoning, it's pretty clear why most of the distinctions are made.

The Koran agrees with the Jewish writings, up to the point where Abraham casts Sarah's handmaiden and his child by that handmaiden, Ishmael, out of the camp for causing trouble.

^So, would you go so far as to claim that superstitious and false observations could not have been made and held before those religions arose? Things that commonly become rules and laws do so because there's a long held belief.

Sharia in the UK: Dog barred from London buses for fear of offending Muslims
"Once Gabriel promised the Prophet (that he would visit him, but Gabriel did not come) and later on he said, 'We, angels, do not enter a house which contains a picture or a dog.'" -- Bukhari volume 4, book 54, number 450

On two occasions last week my dog was barred from London buses, not because she's particularly fierce or big, but on religious grounds. A friend and I had taken her to the park, and as I went across to the grocer, my friend took Daisy, a Manchester terrier, to the bus stop.
As they tried to board the bus, the driver stopped her and told her that there was a Muslim lady on the bus who "might be upset by the dog". As she attempted to remonstrate, the doors closed and the bus drew away.
I have to wonder what they would do in the case of a service dog with a blind or handicapped person? Leave them standing at the bus stop?

We have a Muslim Iranian friend. He hates dogs. He believes they are unclean. Most Persians I know don't have pets and are not animal lovers.
