I was feeding my three cats Iams canned, but now what with the recall, it isn't on the shelves. Does anyone have any ideas what kind of canned I can buy that would be modestly priced, but not too bad quality? I bought Little Friskies and they like it, but I am unsure of the quality. I almost decided to buy the Hy-Vee Gourmet brand, but decided against it. I can't afford a real high end canned food. I feed dry at night, so this is not all they are getting. Thanks for any ideas. Will the Iams canned be back in the stores soon?

If you have a Petsmart in your area, Authority cans sell for cheap and they're good quality. Most quality cans I buy are $1.40-$2.00 in my area... Authority sells for under $1. Nutro isn't too bad either for price I believe.

If memory serves .. a bit ... most have little to no grain and no artificial colors and flavors

I buy the Hy-Vee brand frequently. My cats prefer it over Friskies. Most flavors do have rice flour, but other than that the ingredients aren't bad at all. Less grain than Friskies, anyway. Since they're getting dry food, too, the brand of the canned food isn't as important as it would be if that were the sole diet. What brand of dry food are they getting?

If you invest in good quality food now, in the long run, you will save on visits to the vet. Store brand foods, Friskies, Whiskas they're just junk. Junk that over time could effect your cats' health. Skimp on nutrition just to save a few dollars and you're going to end up spending hundreds (if not thousands) on vet bills for illnesses that could have been prevented with better nutrition.

Nutro isn't a good choice either. Their quality is sporadic and they have had a lot of recalls the last few years as well. I wouldn't suggest it.

I really liked the whiskas purrfectly chicken chicken pouches. Those worked well with Linus and were supposedly 100% chicken with taurine added.

And sometimes it's not a matter of skimping on quality as much as a desperate attempt to find something that the cat will eat. I know from experience.

That's too bad b/c my boys like it and I feed it along with Authority and a few select Fancy Feast flavors. No soy in my house. Authority btw has changed the wet food formula and meat is the first ingredient. So far, my boys will still eat it. The new wet is in black labeled cans. I really think it is the best value cat food out there. Yes - it has brewers rice in it - not good quality carb, but I tried absolutely everything on the market and the three I mentioned here are what my cats will eat. They get Taste of the Wild dry and grain free treats. (I have herpes and IBS in my cat pop.)

IMHO the wiskas is a bit of a joke.. the one you mention has chemical preserving agents that are banned in the EU... Read the back and look up ingredients if you do not know them

As for good food ... Yes, most will agree try to give the best food but you give the cat what it Will eat and for most with many cats or many years of feeding cats grocery foods have worked... Personal experience I am using mid level dry with grocery wet... as the wet gets eaten and I have less in the box than on the "higher end" stuff...

I know.....I found it for a really good price, and my cats like it, but I WON'T use a food with BHA/BHT in it, not even for the ferals. Ugh. And one of the "fancy" foods, Meow Mix in the plastic cups, I think, has SUGAR in it! I don't mind by-products in a canned food, but added sugar is just going too far.

I feed my Chester the chunks with sauce in the Nutro cat food lines. He is a picky guy but he like the chunks with sauce. He gets some of the Natural Choice & Max Cat. Depending on where you shop you might find it within your price range.

I hope you find what works for you!
