Harvey

Hi all, a long one here. As you know we just moved and the lady who we swapped houses with left her cat Harvey, previously to moving I have only seen him a couple of times and he seemed a very loving cat. He is an unneutered male and the agreement with the woman who we swapped with that she was going to get him neutured as she can get him done for free, she has not done this and I am fuming. I have nearly fallen out with her over Harvey as there is lots of issues that she didn't tell me about. Nevertheless I love him like I do my others.
A bit of background to help you-according to our new neighbours she never let Harvey in, hardly ever fed him, he's always in fights and is basically a nuisance cat but they understand that it's her fault and the man next door but one put a bed in his shed for him and used to feed him, they are all glad that we are keeping him.
The first night we were here I let him stay inside as he is such a loving boy and I feel so sorry for him. The next morning when my hubby got up for work he was oing mad as Harvey had pooped and weed everywhere, our cats were seperated in their own room with a tray so it was definetely Harvey. When I told his previous owner she laughed and said you wonder why I didn't want him!!! Not happy with that comment.
I also found out that he is only just over 1 so he's still a baby.
Well after a bit of negotiating with my hubby we would keep Harvey but he said she has got to get him fixed hopefully that will calm him down a bit but I don't think she will now, but he said there is no way on this earth he would be able to be an indoor cat as he doesn't think he will ever change his behaviour, I disagree and I will re-negotiate that after he has been fixed.
Problem is 3 days ago he went out and I have seen him in the garden but he has just been sleeping in the mans shed next door but one and he has been feedin him, I told him to stop feeding him to see if that would coax him back and he came back last night, ate a whole tin of food and then hubby let him out again. He really is a cat that does his own thing though at the minute.
He gets on well with ith our cats when he is inside and I am pleased with that step.
The other thing that doesn't help matters is that there are so many cats around here that are not fixed, just wandering around and even though they probably have owners they are obviously not responsible owners as alot of them look like ferals. There is one that comes alot and he looks like Harvey and our neighbour said a woman over the back owns him, he is in a very poor state and is always fighting. The other day a small black female cat came into the garden and she had a collar on which had got trapped under her leg, I went out to try and get her but she was very nervous and ran away.
Hubby isn't happy as he isn't the biggest of cat lovers and he is refusing to pay for Harvey to be fixed at the minute as he is fuming with his previous owner when she promised. He also won't let me get involved in the welfare of these other cats as he said it's not my problem. I am just fighting a losing battle at the minute. I am going to ring my local Cats protection league as they may be able to give me a voucher to get Harvey nuetured for a lower cost. Hubby may be a bit better then. I can understand his fury but Harvey is still a very young cat and he deserves better, he's a big boy and I really know that having him nuetured will change his behaviour even though hubby disagrees. xx

Ugh, that woman sounds like a real winner. Poor Harvey... That little man is some lucky to now have YOU in his life though. I'm sending a lot of vibes that you'll be able to have him neutered at low/no cost and tht he can adjust to indoor life. you are right, he DOES deserve it. Every cat does. Good luck sweetie.

How is the Harvey situation progressing now? Any luck on vouchers?

I phoned the cats protection league and I have just got to send them a copy of my tax credit income and they will send me a voucher, all together it will cost me about £11 to get him nuetured, I think thats a bargain and hubby can't moan at that. I have also told the lady that we swapped with that she will have to take him as I don't drive and the nearest vets are near where I used to live, she did say she would so lets hope she does. Harvey came in last night and he had obviously been fighting again and it breaks my heart, the sooner he is done the better.
I think my hubby forgets that Billy was like Harvey before we had him fixed and he is a complete different cat now, so laid back. x

Don't forget, it can take about a month for those hormones to cycle out of his system once he's neutered.

We just recently started fostering Charlie - it took about a week before the smell of his pee changed from that really strong tom cat smell to "normal" pee. The first night inside, he didn't "get" the litter box. The next morning, we soaked up his pee with paper towls and set it in the litter box, and put his poop in there - and he hasn't sprayed anywhere or gone outside the box since.

Make sure you use a good enzyme cleaner to clean up all that tom cat scent, because that will just encourage him to keep going. He may get along with your other kitties fine - but his hormones drive him to mark his territory.

I hope she follows through on her commitment to drive him to the vet since you already took care of the rest!

this all works out - for all of you!

Hi and thanks for your advice, I have bought a urine nuetraliser and touch wood there has been no more incidents. We went out to Ikea tonight and I left Harvey inside for a good 3 hours and all has been well. I have come to the conclusion that this poor boy just wants a bit of love and affection. He curls up on your shoulders like a baby and goes to sleep.
If she doesn't take him then stuff her, I will make hubby take him I am too in love with Harvey and I will prove to my hubby that he is worth it.x

Gary's always wanted a shoulder kitty!

Sounds like Harvey isn't giving DH much reason to complain these days.
