Hi, my cat had kittens 2days ago and 1 of them has been injured by one of my other cats. I have 2 tom cats and last night 1 of them came in the room and picked up a kitten and tried to run off with it. I got the kitten back but he had a couple of cuts where the tom had held him in his mouth. I spoke to a vet immediatly who advised to put pressure on the owunds until they stopped bleeding but sed they were reluctant to do anything else with the kitten being so young. Most of them seem to be healing fine but one on his back is starting to look infected. It's been wet all day, even with the mother cleaning it. It's quite a large hole too. I've been hand feeding the kitten all day as he seemed to weak to fight the other kittens to get milk from the mother and he's been having 2.5ml every 2hrs as it says he should so he's eating fine, and apart from being a little weak he seems ok in himself. Should I be worried about this wound and maybe make the vet see him anyways or is it likely to heal? These are my first cats so I'm a little new to all this so any help is much appreciated. Thanks

Can you keep him from his mother and put an antibiotic ointment on the wound so she won't lick it? I would definitely get something on it and maybe even wrap it in gauze so that it stays clean and dry.

I concur. You could put Neosporin on it, and then wrap. Even if mama-kitty licks it, it won't hurt her.
But I would encourage the little one to get as much nourishment from mama kitty as possible. He still needs the colostrum and cat milk won't be as harsh on his new system. Maybe pull the others to the side, and give him some alone time with mom.
Sending mega prayers and vibes that your little guy makes it

Is it possible to put mommy and the kitties in a room where the other cats do not have access? As for the wound, maybe the kitten need a few stitches if it is that big. Make sure the wound is sterile at all time. I would wait and see if it gets more infected (while following other members' advice). If it is worse in a day (I personnally wouldn't wait more than one day if it gets worse), I think I would just find a crate large enough to bring in the whole family to the vet. Take pictures twice a day to see if there is a positive or negative progression. Let's see what other people will say about this, but I don't think I would bring a 3 days old kitten to the vet by himself. Put some warm rice bags (or socks filled with rice) in the crate and a blanket on top of it to make sure it stays warm and dark. Make sure the vet do not make you wait and sees you right away. Bring bottles and milk in case mommy is too nervous to make them nurse and the kitties are hungry.

Hang on a minute please! neosporin isn't safe for cats or kittens- especially at that age unless your vet advises you how much to use.

You may lose this little one unless you can get her to a feline specialist. They are schooled in how to deal with the tiny ones. Please keep your other cats away from the new family and get your toms neutered as soon as you can. Toms will kill small kittens especially if they know the kittens aren't theirs, or they are just wanting mom to come into heat again (grief will throw a Queen into heat quickly)

Please get this kitten to the proper specialist to be seen before it is to late. If any bacteria gets in the wound and the tom's mouth probably had a ton of bacteria without proper vet care, this kitten will not make it. Sorry, but I have worked with kittens who have been abused a very long time- your post set off alarm bells inside of me.

If you want to contact me via PM I will see if I can find a feline specialist in your area- look in your phone book for a cat only vet clinic- they are virtually everywhere these days- or just google your town then put in feline specialist and see what comes up. I know my FS has been indispensible for me to help save kittens just born. Without Dr. Vicki's intervention, most of the tiny ones brought here wouldn't have done as well as they have. Regular vets aren't schooled in the young kittens- especially vets who are old school. Six months and better was the normal age of kittens they treated while in school. Feline Specialists learn from the day of birth and forward-

Good luck- please get this kitten seen quickly-

I have used polysporin eye and ear drops on kittens before with no ill effect.- I wouldn't use the gel though incase the mother cat licks it off. The drops penetrate deeper and absorbe faster. Saying this however, cats mouths are teeming with bacteria and I doubt the polysporing would work on this, the cat needs some type of antibiotic most likely.

Worth a try until you can get into a vet though.

When it comes to such a young one- please do not take any advise from anyone on Internet forums. Find a vet that will work with you and guide you the right way. Just because one thing works for one cat or kitten, doesn't mean that applies to all the kittens or cats out there.

Even though neosporin is safe for cats, wrapping a wound is not - it can trap bacteria in it, and you can be in big trouble. My vet told me to never EVER do that at home - wrapping a wound ONLY in the vet's office! If you ever use Neosporin it needs to be the plain one, and NOT the one with pain reliever.

Also, this kitten need to be taken to the vet - he might need an atibiotic shot... You just don't know what you are dealing with when they are so little with no immune system...

And please please keep your Toms away from your babies, and better yet spay and neuter all of them.... :vi bes:
