Obsessive licking.

One of our foster cats, Olive is a real sweetheart. She is an incredibly loving, cuddly cat and will make someone a perfect companion someday.

We do believe she may have been abused in her past as everytime we first go to pet her, she flinches and ducks until she realizes we're not going to hurt her and then she loves it.

Olive obsessively licks us. She literally could do it for hours and hours if we let her, with the occasional love nip thrown in. I've had kitties who love to give kisses, but this one licks nonstop. Anyone have any theories?

We have one that does that too. I asked about it...check out this thread.

I've got a few lickers here and a couple that duck and flinch and they haven't been abused. Some flinching may be caused by iffy lighting and some by inadvertent bad approach Sometimes, all it takes to stop the flinching and ducking is change the approach of your hand to the cat - my flinchers are better with a low approach directly in front so they can sniff fingers and then decide if they want to be petted. The licking?? no solution to that one - I am always covered in cat spit

Well that makes me feel better because I would CERTAINLY like to think that she was never abused! She is far too sweet of a cat and we really adore her. The licking doesn't really bother me at all but I would be afraid it may bother a potential adopter. I'm hoping not!

I have one that nudges and licks to make you pet her more. She only licks when you stop petting her or are trying to ignore her.

She acts a bit awkward about petting and being picked up and is a very insecure cat. I have no idea what her past history is.
