On Thursday 17th June me and my mum returned home to find our 1 year old cat Lola had given birth. In one room lay a dead kitten in half a sack. In the next room Lola lay in her basket where we left her , another dead kitten half in a sack lay half underneath her , next to her was a dead looking kitten , whilst mum dealt with the obviously dead ones I picked up the little kitten who was mostly clean and continued cleaning it and rubbing its back and breathing in its mouth , to my shock yet happiness it gurgled and then took a breath , straight away I knew it was a fighter. I kept it warm and covered Lola hissed at it and did not have a clue why it was there (or if she did she did not want it near her at all) Not long after Lola gave birth again , She did not try to get the sack off her baby so I broke it and again rubbed the kitten till it took a weak breath. Again Lola wanted nothing to do with this kitten nor her other alive one , I huddled them both together keeping them warm , not long after this Lola gave birth to her fifth and final kitten who was completely still born , yet this was the only one Lola tried to get out of the sack and lick it. Lola looked very poorly panting and had her third eye lids right across her eyes , i phoned the emergency out of hours vets who agreed i could bring her and her two babies down , The vet checked Lola for any more kittens (Lola is quite small for her size , i took her to be spayed which is when i found out she was pregnant) once the vet was satisfied she was kitten free she checked her over and gave her a injection to encourage her milk in (she had no milk what so ever as the kittens were premature) a injection to shut her uterus down (as she was bleeding) and a antibiotic injection to be on the safe side. The vet didn't hold much hope for the kittens and gave me formula and droppers and wished me luck. I took Lola home and she ate a bowl of cat food and drunk cat milk and settled to sleep . The two babies took to the dropper and formula quite well but they both felt cold and week (they were up to a week premature with hardly any fur and fused looking body parts like paws ect) I stayed up all night and begged and willed them to keep going and they did. The got warmer and full bellies and pooed and peed when I stimulated them. The next morning I put them in their bed after there feed tucked them warm and left them for no more then 5 minutes , I went to check on them and on had peacefully died. The other one held on though. The other one who i vowed if it survived I would keep and call Rocky held on tight , drinking milk and going toilet too. Lola tried killing Rocky when I showed him to her bit his neck and i managed to get her away (so unlike my Lola) Rocky got through the rest of the day and a whole night. All day today I have been cuddling him, feeding him with his new kitten bottle and keeping him warm with blankets , my body heat and warm water bottles. This evening i fed him and put him back to bed he was fine .. i then checked to see if he had pooed after his feed and he had so i picked him up and straight away noticed he was floppy. I cleaned him up and checked his airways which to me seemed okay. He kept stopping breathing for 20-30 seconds at a time then gasping , he then suddenly sucked on my finger for 10 seconds took a gasp and died in my hand
i kept him with me for a while , and when it was time for him to get buried I tucked him in the sock he had since birth and kissed him good bye , that was 4 hours ago , i am still crying now. It seemed the second i believed he could make it , he gave up

What a sad ordeal for you. I am so sorry. It is so hard.

For whatever reason, Lola was not cut out to be a mother. At least you were there to comfort them and keep them warm.

You did all you could and then some.

God bless you all the sweet babies now at the bridge.

I'm so sorry.

It could be she didn't want anything to with them and tried to kill Rocky was she knew there was something wrong with them. You tried your best but being preemies and mom refusing to take care of them the odds were against them and she might have rejected them due to unseen issues with them. Mom cats will do that.

I'm so sorry for your sad experience. Good job getting them medical treatment so quickly.

Lola can go back into heat at anytime though, so please get her in to be spayed as soon as she is strong enough, and keep her inside until then. I know you don't want to put her through this again.
