Tear Stains

I found a white Persian cat and even so I wash her eyes out twice a day with a warm wet wash cloth, I cannot get the dark stains away from her eyes, the drainage is of dark color. She does not have any health issues. Angel Eyes is the only product I heard of but not sure if you can use it for cats or only dog. Any recommendations you guys have? Poor thing looks sick all the time...

Ah, this is a common problem with Persians in particular b/c of their pushed in faces. Cats' "tears" have an oxide in them, like what makes blood red, so the staining is brown and will not wash off. You can try using artificial tears in her eyes 2x day to keep her eyes moist, but the drainage issue will not go away. I just use preservative-free eye drops for humans in the cats I have with drainage issues- when they will let me. LOL!! (BTW - they re not Persians.)

I talked to my vet about Angel Eyes. She was ok with it but said it is nothing more than cosmetic. She didn't have any other recommendations.

I appreciate your reply. I do have those ey-drops but thought the more fluid I add the more tears I will create. Over the counter stuff at the pet stores seems to irritate her, plus I am scared it will get into her eyes. I will try giving her some eye drops and just keep washing her eyes out. I don't think she never received much "maintenance" because brushing she hates with a passion as well, but she is adorable....

Eye Envy is a product many Persian owners use.

I have heard that just using water does not help at all, and can make the staining worse.

I highly recommend Eye Envy as well. The stuff is great!

I've wondered if that was safe, figured it was - I have to use the preservative free single dose vials for my own eyes so there's always some around.
I have one cat that's bad about getting stuff in his eyes. I think it's cause he rolls around on the floor, bed, and wrestles with the other cats so much.

If the OP's kitty has more eye drainage than is usual for persians, maybe something in the home could be irritating the eyes a bit. If you use a clay litter that's one of the first things to consider.

Likely due to preservatives. The preservative free (Refresh is one brand, can't think of the other) is nothing more than buffered, sterile saline.

You can also use contact lens cleaner on a cotton pad to remove those stains. The lens cleaner is created to remove protein from the contact lens -- the staining is also protein. Put some on the cotton pad (used to eye remove makeup) and wipe toward the inside of the eye twice a day. This is also safe it some does happen to get in the eyes. ~~ hint -- wiping toward the outside of the eye spreads the stain ~~
