We are shopping for a new washer and dryer. Anyone have advice? I really don't want top of the line. Top loaded not front loader and a gas dryer. So many options out there I am confused.

When I moved here there was a brand new GE top loader washer and gas dryer being installed. I like both of them but you're right, there are many brands to choose from. Just shop around, you'll find what you want.

I know you don't want a front loader, but the new high efficiency models are wonderful. You can save a fortune on water, soap and additives. We bought our Samsung pair last Dec. for half price at Lowes, and we love them! There are also rebates available for high efficiency models too. Don't bother with the pedestals though - they are extra, and usually about $200 each for a metal drawer! The best prices can be had in late Nov. and early Dec.

If you still want the top loader models, consider Whirlpool. I've always had great luck with that brand, and the dryer door that is hinged at the bottom makes for a very convenient "shelf" when loading and unloading the dryer.

Thanks! My Step MIL did some research with front loaders and there have been reports of mildew and mild issues especially in basements(where we have our set). With mom's back issues we prefer top loads. Like you stated the pedestals are few hundred more and break easily(reviews).

I was reading great reviews on whirlpool. Our dryer is hinged at the bottom now and I do use it as a shelf. LoL

That's interesting about November and December. Our set didn't go yet and I am hoping to narrow the choices down before they go.

There are dozens of brands but only a very few makers. Manufacturers are GE (Camco), Inglis, Maytag, White and Electolux. Find a high end brand name you like, and take careful not of the guts and then look at store brands. You will find, for example, Inglis in a Kenmore suit, or GE under the name of Admiral (and many store brands). About the only thing you wont find is Maytag with a store name. All that differs are minor things like timers and controls and a different 'face' made to store standards.

The mildew issue is because water can collect around the seal of the door at the bottom. We always wipe it out after each load, and leave the door ajar for an hour or so, so we have not had this problem. I am amazed at how clean the clothes get.

We also bought a Samsung french door refrigerator in stainless. Normally it would be about $2400 or more, but we got it for $1400 and then had a 20% off coupon! The washer and dryer were $900 for the pair.

Lowe's started the sale the last week in Nov. just before Black Friday. If you are in no hurry, you might wait until then. They want to clear out their inventory before the end of the year. We just got lucky because we were moving into a new house at that time, and really needed the appliances.

BTW Lowe's also carries Whirlpool, and they seem to have the best prices around here.

Good luck!

Actually Samsung makes GE - at least in refrigerators, and if you compare the two, they are identical in interior design.

I bought a GE Harmony set about six years ago - it's a top loader HE washer, but does not have an agitator (the idea of washing my comforter sold me). I didn't want a front loader due to the mildew issue talked about at the time. I absolutely love my set - if I'm lucky, I'll never get a washer with an agitator in it again.

I have a Maytag washer that is probably 15 years old. It just keeps on going and going and going. My dryer is 3-4 years old and is an Amana and I wouldn't walk across the street for a new one just like it.

Fridges are another animal entirely as are ranges. You are right, Samsung does now make GE fridges, and the Canadian ones are made by Danby, a subsidiary of Woods Freezer. Fridge makers are even fewer - Amama, Samsung, Woods (canada) and I believe Electrolux. not sure on that.

Brands are certainly not what they used to be! Confusing as all get out!

My advice, when you figure out what you like - wait till your next big holiday. A lot of places around here have 4th of July sales.
