There are bright shiny pieces of chrome on the new shower that we just got two days ago, and Mandarin is scared of them. Anything I can do to make him not scared? This is the room we keep their cat box in so I don't want him scared to go in there.

I found the text in this book spot on, but the illustrations aren't helpful at all. Good over all book

This mat caught my eye because of its size and texture, which traps fine litter rather well. It's large enough for jumbo litterboxes, which is also a plus. It's not quite as easy to clean as a...

This scoop was a freebie with some clumping litter I bought last year, and I like it so much that I've bought a second one. It's perfect for fine clumping litter, which it sifts very thoroughly....

Is there a way you can wrap rags around the shiny bits? If so, try that and slowly uncover the chrome. He may be seeing his reflection in them and that scares him or just the reflection of other things.

Well fortunately he is still using the catbox even though it is right next to the shower. Still kind of leery of the imaginary cat, but seems to be not freaking completely out. So that's good.

I know how you feel, we hate for them to feel any stress at all. He will get used to it though.
Years ago, when we (ex husband and I) installed a ceiling fan over our bed (he wanted, I didn't ) Baby (
1/98 ) was petrified of the fan. Even when it wasn't moving. I was heart broken because he always slept on my head or in my arms. After a few weeks he started to realize it didn't do anything to him, and soon it could even be running and he ignored it.
Then..just this past January I had to buy a new washing machine. I use a portable, in my kitchen. This one is very different from my old one, and Tolly was very spooked by it for a few weeks, but he has come to take it for granted now.
But, both times I did worry myself practically sick over their stress.
(by the way both Baby and Tolly (as you know) are Red Boys, too. Maybe it's a genetic trait.

I also had a cat who was terrified of the ceiling fan. Had to turn it off whenever he was in the room.
...If he doesn't grow accustomed to seeing his reflection in the chrome {that's probably what he is reacting to} you might want to move his litterbox to another area, where he does not feel like someone is watching him do his business. Cats hate that!

Are you saying that our red boys are neurotic? *gasps* That couldn't be possible at all!

Pretty Princess seems to be adjusting finally. What a sweet boy. And he even tolerated the mistake that I made last week. I thought I was buying his clumpy litter in a bag - it was only $3.50 as opposed to 10.50 which I usually pay - and it was a mistake. The people at the pet store LIED to me. It was clay litter. Well usually Mandarin won't even pee in it, he will pee in the bathroom sink instead, and even despite the chrome fear, he is using the cat box right now. I have clumpy stuff to replace it with today, but what a brave man to tolerate my human stoopidity.
