Good morning folks

Todays question is seasonally related
For a lot of ppl I know its summertime which usually means work holidays n' stuffs. For those that its not summertime, pretend it is

Do you go on a summer vacation? With your family? or without kids? Where do you go? (local/ plane ride/ etc.)

Or are you one of the folks who don't typically take a summer vacation?

We used to go as a family when I was little. Summer meant "big family vacation" and we would always plan where to go and what to do.

One of the weeks was at "the lake" with all of my mom's family - cousins, aunts, uncles - and my grandmother, who was the matriarch. There were 21 of us. It was great.

I miss those summers. Now, if I can afford to fly home in the summer to visit my mom, in Minnesota, I'll go, but it depends on if I have work or not.

We stay home. I have always been a homebody. I have everything I need. My woods, my gully, my creek. My own bed at night. I guess you can tell I am a pretty contented gal!

I do like day trips though. Last week we went fishing up on Oak Orchard Creek that runs from Lake Ontario inland. Swans took off over our head and the sound of the wind from their wings was stunning. I just stared with my mouth open! It was one of those "moments" when you are so thankful to be alive.

I am a huge Lucille Ball fan and we try to get down to Jamestown now and then to go through the museum and visit the cemetery. Beautiful country down there. It's about 70 miles from here. We usually stop for lunch and mosey home the back way.

So short trips, my own bed at night....works for me!

Nope. Heat intolerance really throws a wrench into things and ruins any summertime plans people might make... well that and the heat itself. No one wants to do anything when it's 100F+
(Add fear of heights, can't swim/deep water phobia, bad back, hates spending money, and having nearly fallen out of a roller coaster before and you get someone who's no fun period)

Besides, the turtles are up in the summer. In the worst of the heat they need to be checked a couple times a day and watered every day.

I'm curious how you vacation with all the snakes at home? I can't imagine typical friends, family, and certainly no neighbors offering to take care of them.

Weekend trips or long weekends seem to work out better for us. Sometimes if DH goes some place on business or for the union, I'll go with him, if I don't have to fly. Whenever he goes to Chicago, I try to go with because we have friends there. Next spring, he's going to Louisville, so I'll go....we can drive.

Other than that, though, it's just weekend stuff. To get away and recharge a bit.

Sigh. ...... can't really afford anything major. My BF and I like to go to Lake Michigan to the beach for a couple of days. Going next month. Between lack of funds, an elderly mother and the kitties - it is difficult these days to get away.

This will be my first time away for more than a night in a year.

Haven't had a vacation since I was 15.. so that means almost 14 years... So no, I don't take a vacation. The only time I really have off is when I get sick. Or the possibly one day off I have off a week between both jobs. Spoiled myself and asked for two days off next week but one of those days is Mandarin's annual so it won't be much of a day off.

We love to go away and this year we've already been to San Francisco (January) for 10 days and July 10th DH myself and our daughter and her family are flying to Florida for a week at a really nice resort. Our son will be here to take care of our furkids.

In all honesty it just depends. Usually my "vacations" are going back home but I haven't been able to do that for 3 years. Was supposed to go home this summer but cause of the car accident it didn't work out
We'll probably head out to the lake for the night but other than that, no vacations this summer.

We just go on weekend camping trips.
Sometimes it's just Dana and I, other times with friends and sometimes we go with my Mom and little brother.

There's no place like home
DH and I like to take our vacation the week that kids are back in school for the fall and we go places that are usually packed in the summer with families. If we go anywhere in the summer, it is usually a family get together.

No vacations for us. We were planning on going away next month for our 1 year anniversary but its not happening. We don't have the money since we are moving in a couple months.

I am hoping to go camping or something for a few days though.

Very easily, considering that snakes are remarkable creatures in that they feed well, my guys feed 1-4x a month depending on age.....

Their living environments are on thermostats.....

I really don't have to do anything with them aside from water, which if checked once to twice a wk is sufficient.

Aside from food, water and heat, there is not much more required.... they do not need interaction, do not care for it, tis quite easy....

worst case scenerio: there are local ppl who I could hire to check/feed/etc/ if I planned on being gone longer than a week. The cats pose more difficulty than my snakes

Most ppl around me are open minded, close community and know about them....Its not like they are a secret/taboo/ or run loose around my house

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
We always did the big summer vacation thing when I was a kid and my older brother and sister were still at home. In fact - holidays in general were a time the family tried to get together. My family lived in IL, my grandparents (both sets) lived in PA - one near Harrisburg, one near Allentown. My dad was an only kid - no cousins there. My mom was the youngest of three - her older brother and sister each had 5 kids, so I was the youngest of 13 grandkids. Every other year, one set of grandparents would come to us for Christmas and one would come for Thanksgiving, and when dogs were still allowed on trains, the alternate year we'd get on the train and go visit them (for Christmas, not both Xmas and Thanksgiving). I LOVED the train rides!

August was always the month we were shipped off to visit grandparents. 2 weeks in Harrisburg, 2 weeks on the farm near Allentown - it was always timed so we could go to the Allentown fair. I always LOVED helping my grandpa get the sheep and chickens ready for show. When I was very young, there were always cousins - if not all of them - there.

My dad was a college professor, so he'd time the summer course teaching schedule so we (our nuclear family) could go camping in July somewhere. Some years he'd teach, and his parents would fly to Chicago, and they'd drive us up north in Ontario to some fishing resort up there - I LOVED IT. I should go look it up - it was at Stony Lake. We always rented a boat and I've always loved fishing... there were regulars there that rented a speed boat, so we could go water skiing and stuff... I was a water bug as a kid, so it was all great.

The biggest trip we took was when he didn't teach at all one summer, and we camped out to the west coast and back - did Mt. Rushmore, the painted canyons, Yellowstone, the Tetons, and some park in WA or OR that was amazing - the campsites were carved out of the lava flows and it was like staying on the moon (to a little kid LOL).

We also went one year to the Grand Canyon. We took a mule train down to the bottom and stayed overnight in cabins down there. We rented a car while out there and drove all over NM and AZ visiting indian sites, caves and canyons and stuff.

The biggest problem - we always forgot to take the camera out of the glove compartment of the car. Needed cellphones with cameras!

Gary and I, on the other hand, lived full time on the road in the RV for 10 years, so we just intermixed work with sight-seeing and took our home with us everywhere.

Now that he's in so much pain all the time, we haven't gone anywhere or done anything for almost four years. We did go for a short trip, just 2 hours away over Thanksgiving in 2007. We were living in a house and took the cats in the RV. It was fun - but in the end, not worth it because he broke his ankle when we were bringing everything back into the house from the RV.

So - no, not vacation people.

Several years ago, my dad gave us the property which was my grandparents. It is where I grew up in my grandparents old farm house. We tore down the house and built our own. I am right back where I started from and I couldn't be happier. I never want to leave. I dont even like to leave when I have to. I feel like where I live is a vacation.

I sort of meant longer than a week gone.
You're lucky to have people, I've read of some having problems with neighbors because they had snakes - and not necessarily large snakes.

Sure cats need more interaction, but they're cute and furry and a lot easier to convince most people to pet.

My turtles need more interaction. They honestly remind me a bit of chickens behavior wise - they're walking stomachs and curious about everything. Combine their dietary needs plus my other insect eaters (and the insects themselves that need care) and I'm stuck.

My summer "vacation" every year is going camping. I love it. And this year I plan on taking my cats. We are going to be in a cabin this year so we will definitely be taking them. I cannot wait.

We take a summer vacation every year. Last summer we went to New Jersey and NYC. The year before we went to Maine. This year we are going to Colorado. We drive to everywhere (except NYC, we took the train from Dover) we go on vacation to. Usually we are visiting family that live elsewhere at those times.
