Randomly Attacking

At the friends house that I was house sitting, they have a cat in a back room that I had to take care of frequently each day. Normally, he just watches me from a distance. I followed all of the directions I was given- scoop the box as often as possible, leave the water running in the bathroom occasionally for him, as he likes to drink from it, keep the food full..but that cat was the DEVIL!

He was sitting on the floor when I came in one day in the middle of the week, and I held my hand out to him, so he could decide if he would like to be pet. He didn't look like he did, so I pulled my hand back. He had been meowing the whole time, and when I pulled back, he screamed, and started trying to scratch up my hand. When I backed up, he went after my leg. At that moment, I was so glad he was declawed. It scared me though, and my fiance took over caring for him (he has teeth still, I don't want to find out if he would use those!)
This was not the first time he's done it to me either. Last time I watched them, he did the same thing. On other occasions he allows me to pet him, or rubs up on me to be pet. He just randomly decides that he doesn't like me. His owner was shocked when I told her too, he has never done anything like that before.

Is there something I did wrong? What is the proper reaction to such actions by the cat? I'm sure I will end up watching him again, and I don't want him thinking it's ok to do this. Help please!

Some cats just get stressed out when their owners are gone. I know a cat who does this kind of thing to petsitters all the time. She's perfectly friendly when her owners are there, though. I doubt there would be anything you could do about it, except to ignore him, and not try to pet him.

Ok, I'll remember that for next time. It makes me a bit sad- he was following me meowing, I thought he wanted to be pet! But from now on, I will keep my distance.

The cat felt out of sorts because his normal caretaker was gone. Cats are a lot more defencive when something isn't right in their normal routine. Routine means a lot to them. So you seemed more threatening than you usually do.

This should improve over time. Just keep out of his way if you can, and let him come to you.
