I hope you bear with me and read this through because the ending is great
!
I've been talking a lot about aquariums and fish tanks around here and elsewhere and I've also been venting about how my roommate has a 20 gallon goldfish tank that is very, very overstocked. Well, to make a long story short, my roommate's tank became sick and she wound up losing all of her fish in a very short period of time (72 hours). She was devastated and I was angry. But, I give her credit because she pulled herself up, admitted her ignorance, and asked the owner of a local aquatics store to come into the home and fit it with a new, larger tank. It was quite the financial undertaking, but, as of this evening, the new 75 gallon tank has been set up and is cycling. And, my roommate hopes to be able to begin stocking it in July (the store owner will be coming over to monitor and test the water/tank over the next couple of weeks). She is planning on setting the tank up for semi-aggressives and I'm so excited! And, with someone to help us every step of the way, I am even more thrilled (despite my being jealous that the tank is in her den)! But, while that's all exciting, I have something more personal to share...
I have been having a difficult time lately. Between being sick, having a mini-relapse with my eating disorder, and just generally struggling with some personal issues, it's been hard. And, this weekend was especially stressful. But, today, after I was out with a friend for lunch, I came home to a note on the coffee table telling me to go up to my room. And, when I got to my bedroom door, there was a homemade card attached by tape. The card had a picture of a betta fish on it and inside there were just the words: I think the black coud has lifted and has been replaced by a RAINBOW! It was so sweet. She's an art therapist and a terrific artist. And, it was just a lovely gesture. But, again, that wasn't all there was...
I went in my room, thinking that's all there was to my big surprise, but on my desk there was a 2.5 gallon tank with a gorgeous male crowntail betta inside of it! The fish is stunning and apparently was bred by the owner of the aquatic store. The betta is a pale blue, almost periwinkle/lavender color with red fins (with some blue and green iridescent color thrown in). I mean, I thought my other male veil tail betta was gorgeous, but this one is just...I don't know. He's very special. And, because of that, I have decided to name him Kyro (with the "y" sounding like "eye"). The name carries quite a bit of significance to me and my new fish seems worthy of such a special name -- especially since he was given to me in such a meaningful way...
So, now I have two male bettas. My first is in a 5.5 gallon and has not yet been named and my second, Kyro, is in a 2.5 gallon tank. I love them both. And, I think my roommate was right...maybe that dark cloud has moved on and maybe, just maybe, in its place is a beautiful rainbow
