How much salmon oil is safe to give per day?

I've got a little 6-pound cat that refuses to eat anything but canned junk food. Sometimes she won't even try any of the better kinds and when she does she will only eat a few bites. She'd rather starve than eat dry food.
Last week I decided to try one more thing to get her to eat the Natural Balance I had bought to try. I took one of the gelcaps of omega-3 salmon oil that I had in the kitchen and poked a hole in it and sprinkled the content all over her food. She loved it and ate all of it! Even since it's been working fine although sometimes she will eat up all the good tasting oil and won't continue to eat the remaining bland food so I have to put some more salmon oil on it.

The gelcaps contain 1000mg of the omega-3 salmon oil and I use a little less than a full one for each meal and she eats twice a day. I would say that she probably gets about 1500-1700mg per day. I know that omega-3 salmon oil is good for cats but I'm a bit concerned that she's getting too much for such a little kitty. Does anyone know how much I can safetely give her or is there even any harm in getting a lot of salmon oil?

Thanks for the input.

I agree with sharky. It may just be a supplement but seeking advice from your vet is always a good idea.

Good luck!

the other thing you could try is crumbling up some freeze-dried fish onto her wet food. I have to do this with one of my boys - though I use chicken with him.

I use Pure Bites but there are others, like Dr. Harvey's.

Any other ideas for a skinny cat that needs to gain weight? My Dusty is starting to turn up her nose at everything, but she is just recovering from a very bad ear infection. But she has lost over a pound since Jan. - down to 5.7 lbs.

I called the vet on Friday but she didn't know. She said she was going to find out and get back to me but I thought I'd ask here too. She's a good vet but not that knowledgeable about nutrition issues.

If a teaspoon is okay to give to a cat I should not have a problem though. The amount the kitty would get each day is probably just half of that.

Try the salmon oil on his food. It's high in calories since it's an oil and it has a strong fish flavor.
Also supplement his food with some nutrical every day. It's very palatable and high in calories. If you want to save money you can get a brand called Forti-cal which is pretty much the same thing as Nutrical but cheaper. My cats actually like the Forti-cal better than Nutrical. I buy it at www.revivalanimal.com.
