Just posting pics for comparisons. I don't think I am keeping one of this litter as I have two more litters coming this summer.

Light Girl:

Medium Girl:

Dark Boy:

I forget which one I liked last time, but I think medium girl is nice, not being a Mau expert obviously . Which of these would you keep?

Hope you get some nice kittens from the upcoming litters.

This is an exercise for me in kitten evaluation. I am still learning, but I have had some good pointers from long term breeders. Chins and coats are my cattery's weak spots, but my new stock is definitely going to improve that.

Light girl has light contrast and her ears are a bit narrow and set too close together. She has a nice expression and a good chin.

Medium girl has been the best so far. She has ok contrast, a nice expression, good chin, but her ears are a bit smaller than light girl.

Dark boy is too chunky and fluffy, even though he has decent contrast.

Great that your new stock will improve what you need to. No sense in keeping someone if you don't need to.

Goodness they are stunning babies... Absolutely adorable!

Now I would have picked out medium girl (before your comments) but still like dark boy even tho he's not as good. I love his contrast the best. Its a "can I take dark boy's contrast and put it on medium girl's body" thing.........we always wind up doing this.

My next Ocicat Zorro - the breeder will send me more pics next week (they will be 5 weeks old then - and then I can start comparing the boys for who I like. I think Zorro will be out of this litter

Why would anyone want to keep a boy who is not up to standard apart from coat colour, build the house before you paint it....

Especially as we are talking breeding cats, and I can only assume Sohni is limited in the number of cats she can keep (as we all are) a sub-standard cat with great contrast would not be of any value to her program.

Since mix and match is just not possible(though who wouldn't love to build the perfect cat ) and you have to take these 3 kittens as they are dark boy really doesn't come into consideration.

I'm sure your new litter is making your decision-making process all the more difficult! But when time and space are at a premium, you only have room to keep a sure-thing. . .

I simply hate having to choose between keeping a new shining star for my program or retiring one of my best buddies to a forever home. As I see it, if I have to let one of my darlings go, then the replacement had better be a sure-thing. I just don't have the room in my own program to experiment for several generations. . . or the emotional stamina to continue to constantly retire my favorites!

Amanda, I never said that the boy was the best to keep for breeding. Over all the medium girl is the best of the group right now. Just saying that I still like the boy because of his contrast. Doesn't mean I would breed him or show him.

If I was choosing a pet just for a pet, it would be the boy.

Sorry, that's where you lost me. I didn't realise you were talking from a pet perspective, I assumed you were thinking breeding quality since there would be no reason for a breeder to be keeping a pet q kitten.

Well his pet home is ecstatic with him. They are fairly newly immigrated from Poland, and I can barely understand the lady, but she loves him to bits already. They have agreed to all my pet restrictions, and he will be an indoor, pampered pet for the rest of his life. I will have to caution them on watching his weight however, as he has retained his baby fat and loves his food!

My last girl kitten from this litter is going to my sister. I finally decided. She will be spayed, and if my sister wishes, she can come along to show both her and her current Mau, Zahra, with me. I just can't over cat myself at this point and I don't think either girl is stunning enough to keep whole.

Zahra is Safiya's sister and did very well at her first kitten show. My sister likes to come to shows with me, she just can't afford it too often. I'll try and convince her to come to more this year...

Additionally, my sister lost her second 17 yr old cat this Spring, and Zahra really needs a punching bag, I mean playmate. Her boyfriend and I are going to give her the kitten for her birthday. She had already asked me about getting another kitten so I know she wants her.

Now it's time to wait and see how my current baby batch grows. We have high hopes for them as their parents are simply gorgeous.
