I'm abit concerned about my sister. She is beautician and always seems to be sick. I dont know what advice to give her besides really make sure she uses that hand lotion after every person as preventative measure. Alot of throat issues. Some really odd stuff like green growths in the back of the throat they weren't sure about. Leg and hand issues, shingles, etc. Her work is really getting mad at her and I fear she is going to lose her job but she starts crying and says its way too painful to just suck it up and work like her bosses say. She is only 32. I told her start getting documentation in a file encase she has to prove her issues someday if this keeps up.

I wonder if it's all the chemicals she's around - does she do hair or share space with those that do? I'd be sick a lot more than ~2 months a year around chemicals like that.

Has she tried to figure it out with a doctor? It's one thing to just stay home if you feel bad, but quite another if you have a doctor's note saying you're truly sick.

If she's already doing quite a bit of paper work with her job maybe she could look into doing receptionist somewhere?

There aren't too many employers who will allow 2 months of sick leave a year to an employee who is not diagnosed with a serious medical issue. Your sis needs to be diagnosed.

It's quite possible that she does need to learn to suck it up a little (we have an employee here who will call in for the entire duration of a cold, for example). It's also possible that she has hypochondria.

You know, I really hate it when people say that to someone. I've had people accuse me of that for years - as if the gallbladder issues that where destroying my liver were made up or as if the arthritis in my spine doesn't exist because of my age.

And I really hate it when people personalize everything that's said. There are a lot of people who have minor health issues who blow them up into major ones in their heads. Is that true of everyone? No, but it is true of some (many).

And you're prejudging when you simply do not know.

I heard the main thing which aggravates shingles is stress. My boss from my old job had it - She said it's the worst illness you can imagine. Even a whisper of a breeze from an open window causes unspeakable pain and suffering. It is caused by a viral-something-or-other--- but it's stress that makes it go haywire. This is what she told me. From information on the internet it seems like shingles needs to be treated in the hospital intravenously
That's super serious.

I also wonder if it's the chemicals in the products she is using.

FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) can be used to cover chronic medical conditions but I believe there needs to be a mininimum of 50 people working for the company (among other qualifications) before it can be used.

Not to be a buttinski, but when you put a thread up for replies, you get replies, some you may agree with and some you may not.
Sometimes you just have to take the wheat with the chaff.

That's true, stress and shingles = bad combination.

I believe Shingles is related to the Chicken Pox virus. I would rather have Chicken Pox.

It is the chicken pox virus. Once you get any type of herpes virus, you're stuck with it for life. If you have chicken pox naturally you do run the risk of getting shingles later. Those that were vaccinated don't. Also those who had chicken pox naturally and are naturally exposed to it can keep some immunity up to help prevent shingles. Which is where vaccinating backfires a bit and why you should probably get a vaccination against shingles.
The reason it flares up during times of stress, illness, and old age is because of the body's lower immunity to that herpes virus.

As for replies... I don't think anyone has the right to judge another and call them a liar.

Agreed. Where, pray tell, did that happen in this thread?

SW you know I love you babe but I think you might be getting Munchausen Syndrome confused with hypochondriac. They're different.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MunchausenSyndrome - This is the one where the person tells lies and is basically a fraud. In other words, the person's healthy --but a total phony with fake symptoms. See the quote from the internet below

Munchausen syndrome is a term for psychiatric disorders known as factitious disorders wherein those affected feign disease, illness, or psychological trauma in order to draw attention or sympathy to themselves. It is also sometimes known as hospital addiction syndrome or hospital hopper syndrome.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypochondriasis - This is the one where people worry worry worry about symptoms (often real symptoms) even to the point where they sometimes actually do get sick.

Yeah I agree, she should go to the doc and try to get some sort of dianosis. Many places would never allow that many sick days. In fact, in the US no employer, except the government is required to give you sick days. You can get fired for calling in sick, but most jobs understand people get sick and they can't fire everyone.

Yet you ignore my first suggestion (that she get diagnosed) and my second (that she should suck some things up). You choose to focus on my statement that it is "possible" (note that I didn't say probable or definite) that there's hypochondria.

It is possible. In fact I hope that's what it is because it isn't normal for someone so young to be so physically ill that she misses two months a year of work. The OP's sister needs to find out what is going on so she can get back on her feet.

I am sorry your sister is having so much sickness. Her doctor needs to help her with a diagnosis. I hope she gets things straightened out so she won't lose her job since they are so hard to come by right now. Is she getting plenty of rest at night. Is there some reason she is so stressed. Is she taking good care of herself, eating right etc. I hope she feels better soon.

Some people just have bad luck. Illness knows no age. My health issues started young, the chronic migraines started at age 10. There are others here who have been unlucky enough to have this stuff start young on them, too.

Some people can, though that wouldn't cause them shingles. Generally when one person calls another a hypochondriac it's calling them a faker, a liar. If you told someone that you had a really bad headache and had to stay home and they replied "oh, you're just a hypochondriac" you'd likely get mad. Who wouldn't?

With all the threads on here of people being ill and asking for vibes, what would the response be if people just started going into the threads of people that make a lot of these and called them a hypochondriac?

It's just not a nice thing to say to anyone.

You are reading WAY too much into my statements. Hypochondria is a real condition and when someone has a bunch of symptoms yet no diagnosis it is something to be considered. That's all.

My heart goes out to your sister. I agree she needs to work with her doctor to figure out what is going on in her body! She needs to plan on a career change, too, it's very difficult work standing on your feet all day and breathing in chemicals at a salon if you are feeling well; a nightmare if you are sick. Sending vibes for your sister.
