Over the river and through the woods...
Last night I was sitting at my computer and DH was at his and everything was fine. We had recently eaten, did some work in the yard, took showers and were just relaxing. All of a sudden I started to feel 'strange" and everything started to go black. Then my arms started twitching. The next thing I remember is waking up on the floor with DH yelling my name and my MIL hanging up after calling 911. DH said that I was out 10-15 minutes. Well, long enough for him to get me on the ground (I didn't fall out of the chair, he lifted me and laid me down), call MIL and have her come over and call 911.

He said I was twitching most of the time (I even wet myself
) but I would look at him then my eyes would roll back in my head again. I don't remember any of this. He was about ready to start CPR because he said my breathing was very shallow but then I started to come to.

By the time the ambulance came I was coherent but still shaky. And feeling very stupid! But, off to the hospital I went (my first ambulance ride...and hopefully my last!). In the ambulance my O2 level was 94 so they gave me oxygen. My blood sugar was 78 which is low on the normal scale (I'm not hyper or hypoglycemic).

At the hospital, they gave me IV fluids (can I tell you how much I HATE IV's?), ran full blood and urine tests to check for infection, EKG and head CT scan (I now have proof that I do indeed have a brain!). Everything was fine although my electrolytes were a fraction lower than normal.

I did drink 2 beers while making dinner, but switched to water with dinner and was drinking orange juice when this happened so it wasn't that, plus that was 3 hours prior. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary. I'm far from a lush, but I do enjoy a few beers while making dinner sometimes so it shouldn't have caused a seizure.

What kills me is it took them 4 hours to tell me....I fainted. No sh*t. Doesn't explain the seizure though. And, they kept asking me what happened. Ummm...I don't remember? It wasn't until they were ready to release me that the nurse actually asked my husband what happened!

Anyway, a very scary experience for both of us. Has anyone else just have a strange, random seizure for no reason? I have no history of anything like this. Yes, I will get light headed at times if I stand up to fast or have been out in the heat too much. I did almost pass out one time at work but that was after give blood and not eating lunch afterward. I don't know if it is something I should be worried about or just one of those freak things. I am going to make an appointment with my primary care physician next week to see what he thinks.

Sorry so long....it was a long night!

Wow, that is really scary. The interesting thing is that both the beers and especially the orange juice should have raised your blood sugar. It doesn't make sense that your should have been so low after both eating and drinking. I would certainly follow up with your doctor or an internal medicine specialist. This just isn't right.

Take care.

OMG! That is scary! Thank goodness you weren't injured. And your DH, bless his heart, I know he was terrified. I have no idea what would have caused this; I am glad you are seeing your family doctor.

No wonder you are both terrified! I'm just glad that everything checked out ok and here's hoping it was a one time only thing.

I am glad you are following up with your physcician. Get in as quickly as possible. Seizures never happen "just cuz" and it does need to be investigated.

Healing vibes to you....

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. In fact, I was on my second glass of OJ when this happened. DH just refilled it 10 minutes or so before I started to black out. It makes no sense.

I think DH is more shaken up than I am, which is understandable. He told me today that his mind just went blank and he couldn't remember how to do CPR (he is a volunteer fireman and can do it on a stranger, but he just froze). He's demanding me to see our doctor (which I agree with) and in his words..."There is NO way I'm burying your a$$!" Such a romantic he is.

Holy moly!! That is so scary to just have happened out of the blue like that! And you were out for 10-15 minutes?! That sounds like more than just fainting to me. Glad you're seeing your doc next week. And glad you're feeling better now.

Scary stuff, though.

Thanks honey
. That does make me feel better (although I'm sure it was scary for your family at the time). I know the body does some strange things sometimes. The worst part was waiting for the CT scan to come back. I think I have watched to many episodes of "House"...I kept waiting for a brain tumor or something.

I jerk and shake during some of my faints and near faints. I did it quite a bit on the tilt table test and was extremely sore when the doc woke me up - plus very confused.
So it is possible to have seizure looking faints, as strange as it sounds.

I hope follow up visits can figure this out. I'd ask them to do a long GTT with insulin draw, for starters.

how very scary---your symptoms are very much like my reaction to a black widow spider bite. However, my reaction was prolonged and for 2 weeks afterwards I had muscle cramps and slight spasms.
Sending mega prayers and vibes that not only do you find out what happen, you find out it was a one-time incident

Poor you. What a frightening thing to happen.

Just a thought. I wonder if you had a sudden allergic reaction to something - like the orange juice?

I avoid orange juice and especially oranges like the plague because they make my lips swell up.

Not wanting to scare you but get your kidneys checked too.

Could be for some reason your potassium levels shot up. That can cause seizure-like symptoms - I know, I saw it when my son's kidneys failed. His whole body went into spasm, was twitching etc. Fortunately, he was in hospital (A&E - what you call Emergency Room) at the time. Up until that point, the medical profession, despite being told he had kidney problems thought he just had a virus.

Once the potassium levels fall, the body returns to normal.

Definitely you must get thoroughly checked out by your doctor.

Sending healing energy to you

That is scary! Thank God you are ok.

I was working with someone who had a seizure. She had another seizure that night and that was the end of it.

The doctor attributed it to her antidepressant. She hadn't been on it very long.

I was going to ask if you (Calico) take any medications that may have seizure listed as a side affect. Thank goodness you weren't alone.

please do follow up quickly on this. Don't put it off. And check your meds, if any, read up on the side affects.

Wow... I am surprised they didn't do an EEG (where they attach wires to your head and check the brain waves) When I had 2 seizures about 27 years ago, I didn't remember anything. I just remembered waking up in the hospital room. Back then they kept you at least overnight. I was in there for 3 days. I haven't had one since. That time my potassium levels were very low.

You should have your doctor refer you to a neurologist. He should be able to get to the root cause of the one you had. and prayers heading your way!

Oh wow that is so scary! I'm glad you are ok! Good luck with your appointment. I would sure thing there would be a reason for you having a seizure, but I don't have any clue!
