There is much activity around my house today. We are surrounded on three sides by wheat fields. They are harvesting it today. What I see out there in the fields now is much different than what I saw as a child growing up here.
I have memories of my grandfather behind the mule going up and down the rows. The amazing thing is they will be gone in a short time and my grandfather would be there until dark.

Is that winter wheat? Not much is growing here, not much seeded and it is almost past the time to get the rest done, way too wet. Harvest is going to be a pathetic week in September.

What precious memories you have, and what wonderful ones you are being given now! I love to think of it all, the hard work of the farmers, all that wheat being made into cookies, cakes, bread, all those smiles of the people when they see the good food to eat. Makes me appreciate what a gift it all is - thanks for sharing

Sometimes I wish we were back in the days before processed food, I think we would all be healthier.

Yes, they are precious memories. My grandparents would not know what to think if they could sit on my porch and watch how farming is done. Our house sits on three acres in the middle of a farm that has been passed down in my family for about two hundred years. I watched my grandfather go out before daylight, hitch the mules and walk behind them until 12 o'clock. He came to the house, ate, laid on the couch for a few minutes to rest and then went right back at it. At night he came to the house, washed his feet, went to bed and started over the next morning. There were no bathrooms in the old farmhouse, no running water and I remember when they put in the electricity. The bedrooms had a bare bulb in the middle of the room with a little gold pull chain. We tied a string onto it and then tied it to the headboard of the bed so we could get in bed and then turn out the light. I appreciate my heritage because it makes me so thankful for all I have now. But I do remember a much simpler way of living.

I remember helping my relatives harvest the tobacco on my Grandpa's farm when I was a kid. It was all done by hand. The cutting down, staking, and hanging the tobacco in the barn was messy, dirty job. I had a lot of fun doing it.
