All of a sudden two cats fighting. HELP!

We ahve been together for 4 or 5 years. 3 male cats. Fang and Pansy have always been best buds. This morning they started fighting. Pansy stares at FAng, then Fang runs, then pansy chases him attacking unless Fang gets under something. then they stare and growl. FAng is now afraid of Pansy. Pansy earned his name by being a scardy cat, now he is agressive. I had to keep them separated all day, I think we all slept together last night.
The only different thing that happened was that yesterday, I took Fang outside for around a half hour while I was out there, let him walk around the yard. After that we were all here, nothing happening until this morning. I don't know what to do, when I separate, Pansy stands outside or inside the door and crys. I can't imagine how we are going to get any sleep tonight. Any ideas?

This sounds like displaced aggression. One cat sees something/smells (usually outside, through a window) which upsets him and spooks him and he transfers all that scariness onto those who are usually nearest and dearest.

Things you can do:

Use the vanilla trick

keep them separated when you are not home

do a whole reintroduction, treating them as if they are brand new to each other.

Feliway plug in diffusers can help too.

This seems to be happening a lot lately, around the world. Wonder what's up.

thanks, I did put vanilla on their backs a drop, doesn't seem to make a diff. where does it go?
I do keep them separated, and last night pansy slept in the basement. I have to keep them apart when I am here too, otherwise, pansy holds Fang at bay and they just keep staring at each other and growling. I have stopped the charging with a spray bottle. a little spritz on pansy makes him go the other way.
how long is this going to last?
