Male Or Female?

This is just a question. Do you think male cats have a male type face, and female cats have a girlie type face? IOW, can you tell just by lookin' at 'em?

I think many males get the "tom cat" face because they are allowed to be intact until adulthood. Like this guy, just neutered last week - an adult male.



Whereas Dory here was neutered at a younger age.

I'd say it depends a lot more from the skull shape than gender. 'My breeds' (BSH, BLH) happen to be those that are famous for their round heads and even the females look more manly in these breeds than in oriental or regular type breeds for example. One of my boys is almost 3, still intact, but looks more like a female of the same breed when you look at his face.

Flambe has what I would call a "feminine" build. Small-boned, delicate features, etc.

There is a difference in the facial features that's only more difficult to see on certain breeds - such as persians or exotics. Very young kittens that haven't started growing out of the indistinctive round kitten face are impossible to tell.

Generally male cats have a wider nose and slightly more spacing between their eyes. They will often have longer features to where as a female will have smaller shorter facial features.
There's also some subtle body features that are harder to explain, but if you've seen enough cats you recognize it instinctively yourself.

Note: I am taking about altered cats, not intacts!


Flambe in the picture above looks very male to me. He has the wider nose base and a more male cat brow line. The only thing that would throw me off would be his age, I would guess that he was younger - < 2 years.
