Just joined today. I have loved cats all of my life and have fostered all sorts of domestic and wild critters during my brief two-year stay in Mississippi. I right now have two kitties. Mandarin is 6 years old. He likes to be called a Princess, because he is jealous of his little sister Majel being called a Princess. Mandarin is a red/orange tabby who we named Mandarin because I am allergic to oranges and my husband is assistant produce manager of the local grocery store - so we thought it would be funny. Majel had a slit in her ear that looked like the Vulcan salute, and the name is from the creator of Star Trek's wife's name. It also means "help" in Cherokee which went along with Linus (RIP June 23, 2000 - August 24, 2009) and his love of the Beatles and Star Trek.
Both of our kitties were adopted from our local animal shelter. We adopted Mandarin when Linus - my Siamese mix - and LeAnn - my husband's daughter - were still alive because she said that Linus was lonely. She was right.
Majel was most recently adopted. Mandarin and I couldn't handle being so alone and Linus being gone and so my husband and I picked out a kitty from the same place we had adopted Mandarin.
I can't picture my life without cats, and I plan to learn and teach as much about cats as is humanly permissable.
And make people smile. I love that.
I work at a bookstore and in fast food. I love my bookstore job, and I am a veteran fast food person who just can't seem to get away from that sort of job since I'm so good at it and in high demand. Not bragging, just lamenting. Heehee...
Looking forward to meeting all of you.
The name LadyHitchhiker has been my log-in name for most places since I was about 14. It comes from my love of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams and seems fitting as much travelling as I do on the internet.
I also used to work at a vet's office when in Mississippi, volunteered at the spay bus which travelled around doing low-cost spaying and neutering and volunteered prolifically at the animal shelter there. I also like to volunteer at the animal shelter here when I get a chance.
