Ever since I've known Rob, he has been anti-new car, anti-car payment, anti-full coverage insurance. We've had a good 15 cars in the last 5 years, just buying some beater for a short period of time, whatever. We have our two "race cars", my Camaro and Monte Carlo SS, waiting to be finished. We've had our Integra LS for 3.5 years, and bought our F-350 dually last summer. The Integra has 265,000 miles on it, and we have a 5,000+ mile trip coming up in August (by then, the Acura will be close to 270k with the way we drive). We have been looking for another newer Integra or RSX since January with not much luck. Every near-purchase we make, someone flakes out. We drove to NC this weekend to buy a car, made a deal with the guy over the phone, he flaked when right before we made the trip. So Monday I went to go test drive a new car.
The dealer let us take the new car home over night and we put 112 miles on it driving it! On Tuesday, we went to the dealer and returned the car, telling them we wanted one like it, but not that exact one since Rob wanted some extra options. So we ordered one straight from the manufacturer. What did we buy?
A Performance White 2011 Mustang with charcoal interior, 6 speed manual transmission, a spoiler, and 3.31 performance rear axle
It should take about 6 weeks in production in Flat Rock, MI. I really have my fingers crossed that it won't take more than 8.5 weeks, since that's when we leave for CO. Rob told the dealer we needed it by August 14. He said that if it doesn't get here in time, they can keep it because it will really mess up our plans (probably would have to drive the dually to CO, and that's A LOT in diesel fuel). The owner of the dealership was putting the order in, and there was even a Ford representative in his office he told about it. This will be the longest six weeks ever. I've personally never had a new car - especially not one that is the next year's model and built especially for me! Rob says it's my early college graduation gift (a few YEARS early!) because he told me when I got out of school he'd get me a brand new car.
I really liked the new Camaros as well, and we were going to test drive one, but there are no Chevy dealers in the area with a 2010 V6 with a 6 speed manual. Rob liked the interior of the Mustang better, and it actually rated better in performance and handling test comparisons. I think the new Mustangs are gorgeous as well. The '11 V6 makes almost the same HP as the '10 V8 GT! It will only be $280/mo or so, + $72/mo for full coverage insurance. I don't think that's too bad for insurance, considering Rob and I are both under 25 (him until December, me for 2 more years).
I told Rob we earned a new car. We've been working a lot, we rarely ever have time to do stuff for ourselves at the end of the day, and after all the used cars we've bought, frustration we've had looking for another, and all the money we spent on CARFAXing, we deserve something nice!
