Ginga mewls, what age should she properly meow? She is 4 and a half months old or so. We all think she should be meowing properly but, we're not sure.
What age did your kitties start meowing or what age should they be meowing properly?

My boy is 8 (got him as an adult) - he actually doesn't meow and wasn't all that verbal until he noticed I reacted to my girl's vocals. I read somewhere that cats never really meow to each other - it's more to talk to their humans...wonder if that's true.

I think people are going to tell your that every cat is different, but Aya didn't really meow until she was 5-6mos old unless she was really upset by soemthing.

She was a real quiet kitten. She came home from being spayed with a voice all of a sudden. We wonder whether she met some other cats while staying voernight at the Vet's who taught her how to speak, or whether it was just such a horrible experience that she learned she needed to speak up for herself.

Thanks, Lyrajean. Did Aya mewl first or meow? We joke that Ginga has no voice. The only time she is even a little vocal is dinner and breakfast time.

My 8 month old doesn't meow, she squeaks.

My Jack is 12ish and for the first 7 years we had him we also had Mo. We never heard a single peep out of Jack until Mo died and then he found his voice.

Yes, Ginga squeaks. I just don't remember Jazzy's kittenhood. I wish I had a better memory

I've heard them meow pretty young. Your kitten can meow, she just doesn't have a reason to do so.

Sho didn't meow until he was a couple years old and one of us accidentally stepped on his tail.

And yes, cats do meow to each other. With 7 of them in my house, anytime they're awake it's rarely quiet for long. Tanna meows at everyone, Tomas talks to the other cats and Blaan talks back to him.

Thank you, strange_wings. Her mewl is also very quiet unless she is REALLY hungry. When she mewls loudly, it sounds more like a meow. It just so light!

She went from nothing to meows. She never talked as a kitten unless the Vet was poking her or I shut her in the b-room for the night (still has separation anxiety to this day).

Now she has a full repetoire of meows, chirps, trills. She likes to talk to me like its a conversation. She's not as vocal as a Siamese, but If you watch the Cats 101 clip of the Japanese Bobtails you'll get an idea what she's like vocally. She has a tail but is very much a domestic Japanese cat.

Nuts had a very strangled sounding meow until Attitude went into heat(he is intact, Attitude was spayed the next day) at 5 months old(thought I had another month, bad me) and then he howled and yowled loudly, meowed non-stop(I don't blame him, I found out she was in heat because he was on top of her and separated them), and found his voice big time. He hasn't shut up since. He greets Paul meowing, if the door is open he meows, if he sees another cat he meows, if he wants attention and we're busy he taps us with his paw and meows, if we're not he just walks up to us and meows.

Some don't meow ever, some have unique sounding meows(Blue who is a Russian Blue has a very unique meow), others never have anything to say but can meow(I wish mine were like that at times.) The 13 kittens(16 if you count Callie's 3 who a neighbor found and let them live in her backyard before adopting everyone out including Callie) everyone had and delivered to our porch at 4 weeks old, most meowed 'normally' from the second they arrived. They brought a 'test kitten' earlier I guess to see if it was ok to bring them over, that was Attitude(a little black and white ball of fluff with no teeth) and she knew how to meow and she was at most 3 weeks old.

Both Attitude and Nuts have a lot to say, Maude didn't really she mostly hissed, the only time Mama(she's at the very least 3 I wouldn't doubt if she was a lot older) really did was when her intestines were hanging out her rear due to a rectal prolapse(I'd be more than mildly talking if that was me), Biter(2 years old and Mama's kitten) does when she feels like it, and Runt, Goldie Jr and Half-tail(turn 1 sometime this month and Biter's kittens and Attitude and Nuts' litter mates) all meow.

Sylvester who just shows up to eat and hisses at me when I bring the food pan out if he's here and is too afraid to let us near him howls(he could be a she, he won't let us near him so it's not like we can check), and has a very very very loud meow(I can hear him with the door closed watching TV.) He doesn't talk much he just mostly howls, it's like a cross between a cat in heat, and a male smelling a female in heat(they are different vocalizations if you've never heard them) with a little cat fighting sound thrown in, usually when no other cats are there while laying on the porch. It freaks me out every time I hear it, luckily he usually doesn't hang around long enough to howl. His meow is just as loud but like I said he doesn't use it much.

Holland is two years old and she rarely, rarely meows - she's a very quiet kitty. Even when she does talk, it's usually trills or a high, whiny meow that is probably more like a mewl. I guess she just doesn't have much to say!

This is pretty much Ellie - she's 3 and usually just squeals or chirps (at me or George when they pass each other). Otherwise, she's very quiet.
