Shipping a cat ...

So, long story short, when my ex and I broke up, she moved back to her family in Rochester, and left our jointly owned cat with me, but she's wanted it back for some time now, and now that I've ended up adopting a stray by accident (see http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=216949 for details and more back story), I'm curious at recommendations on the best way to ship a cat across the country. She's a DSH, 7-8 months old estimated, but she doesn't do well being in her carrier when I have had to take her on a long drive before. Any recommendations on services, things to watch out, and price would be HUGELY helpful.

Well, there's http://www.petairways.com/, which is relatively new. And maybe you could try posting in the Breeder's Corner section - a lot of the members there have experience of sending, or receiving, kittens and cats from across the country, using normal domestic airlines.

Two of my cats were shipped from the east coast to the west coast with no problem.
You do have to have a vet check and a rabies certif.

It should be made clear that I am not personally travelling with Sabra; I can't take the time off from work to fly to the west coast and back. That being said, it looks like my plans to ship Sabra off have been delayed :-/

No, you can ship a pet on a domestic airline without yourself traveling - a lot of the folks in the Breeders corner do that all the time.

And the pet airline doesn't actually carry human passengers - just pets, pilot, and air attendants.

Both my cats came in cargo.
It was real easy to pick them up at the airport.

They will fly under the plane. I know people always talk of "horror stories" but in all the years I've shipped cats or had them shipped to me - I've experience no problems from point A to point B.

You will have to check airlines for prices - they do vary. One thing - do NOT sedate your cat at all (in fact, airlines will not accept a sedated pet for flying). Line the carrier with a puppy pad or two in case of accidents.

Hrm, interesting. Looks very promising, as I'm relatively close to JFK, and my ex is close to SeaTac. I just got the health certificate, and I'll be calling my vet in Rochester for the Rabbies certificate (I have proof of vacation from them, so hopefully they can issue it without having to see the cat in person).

I admit I have no experience in doing this, but Delta Cargo, and American Airline Cargo both will ship cats after a quick google search, but they don't have a lot in explaining how to set things up.

There are also services that do door-to-door which may be more ideal.
