Hey all!

So I brought my kitten home from the vet's on Friday from her spay (which was Thursday, they kept her overnight) and I've noticed what appears to be some bruising or something?!

I was just wondering if anyone would know what it was, or if that's normal or if I should take her back to the vets.

When my first cat was spayed she was much younger, didn't have a cone and I never noticed anything like this.
Health wise the kitten seems fine! She's been eating, drinking, sleeping and keeps jumping up on things - including the really high scratching post I have. So it seems she's fine, but I just wanted to double check.
The incision looks fine, the yellowish stuff around it is iodine, I think.

I'd rather not take her back to the vets so soon if I can help it. She'll be going back next Monday to get her stitches out anyway.

Thanks

(and sorry for the size of the photo, I've resized it, but it doesn't seem to want to work.)

You should not allow her to jump on anything.
She can pull something out.
The picture is to small.
My Oreo is almost 3 and she just had surgery 2 weeks ago and there is no bruise at all but I made her stay in the show shelter where she can not play or jump.

I would email the pic to the vet and ask what's going on, or at least call them. It looks like either a bruise or something like that and it's definitely NOT normal. The other thing you could do is call an ER vet and describe the condition to them.

I can't tell anything from such a tiny pic.
However, if you're concerned you could take her in tomorrow. Often vets will not charge for follow up visits from things like spaying - though you'd be charged for any additional meds needed.

There's about a 50/50 chance of an incision getting infected, so it's better not to risk it if the incision looks odd to you.

Hmm, you think it's that high of a chance? I've had at least 30 female cats spayed and none of them ever got an infection. One male got an infection, but that was because his owners let him outside the next day. Definitely a good idea to keep an eye on it, of course.

That large red spot above the incision is what you're talking about, right? It does look odd. Do you know if it was there before? Hard to tell with fur in the way. Maybe it's a birthmark. Or shave burn? It would be best to call the vet and ask. Maybe they noticed it when they shaved her.

Thanks for the responses. And yes, I was referring to the large red mark near the incision.

I'll call the vets and see if maybe I can't email that picture to them and see what he says

It either happens or it doesn't. It seems to happen to any females I've had spay about 50% of the time, even when having used different vets. The last two sisters - one's incision started getting infected and the other sister's never did. The strange thing is that the one who did isn't the type of kitten to run, jump around, and never licked at her belly.
Luckily I'm paranoid that at the slightest bit of redness I check incisions several times a day and have never had any of the infections get very far.

Really that's all you can do - be a vigilant pet owner.

MadMax - I hope your kitty is ok and that this isn't anything serious.
