Basic Feline Pine question

We use Feline Pine (original) and could not be any happier with it. However, I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to do the litter that uses it. We have a traditional box, nothing fancy. As you know, once the cat pees, the pellets turn to a sort of dust type substance. Does anyone have any tips on how to clean out the box -- seperating the pellets from the dust. We have a traditional scoop as well.

I realize that Feline Pine makes special boxes for this purpose, however, they are $20 + $10 s&h.

Is there any more cost efficent way to do this without dropping $30?

Feline Pine's box is here:

Amazon also carries something similar... Van Ness shifting litter box:

that also offers free shipping eligible

Or is there any other way to do this since we already have a box?

Thanks!

I use a pellet litter with the correct trays, since Ozpet litter saves me so much money over time the set up costs didn't bother me.

The Amazon tray should work, I couldn't get the larger photo to load though so going on the description.

Some people have made their own sifting trays by drilling holes in one tray and sitting in into another tray. Or you can get trays with holes from garden or hardware shops that will fit in a litter pan.

I have quite a few cats so I wouldn't think of not using the proper trays, it's so easy to just give then a shake a couple of times a day.

I may order the one on Amazon since it qualifies for free shipping. I generally would have no problem investing and won't in the near future -- we are just moving soon and have to save every dime possible.

The drilling idea is brilliant... now if only I had a drill.

We should do the same thing, but now it takes me about 5 mins max to just push everything to one end and shift it with the scooper and then put the good pellets in a small litter pan - after everything is scooped out, the good pellets are dumped back in and, if needed, a little extra scoop or two is added.

We tried to find some screen that would work but can't get the exact size. Our pan is not the traditional one - its about double the size, so you would have to kinda custom cut the wire to fit right without loosing good pellets on the sides.

I have been looking into changing my cats litter to the Feline Pine. It seems easier and better for Tessie since there is no dust. Does the feline pine have a smell? If so is it a strong smell that you would notice walking into the house?
Sorry if I high jacked this thread! I am just interested to know

Regina, Honestly I do not notice a smell (and I think I have a sensitive nose). After much research, I came to the decision to switch our kitten to Feline Pine. The other benefit is that it is safe to ingest -- though, obviously, we do not encourage our kitten to ingest it or anything. As you can see from this thread though, it could require the use of a special litter box.

If you do decide to get Feline Pine, the pet retailers tend to be more expensive than Target. We use the original, we are pellets, and is about $8.50 for 20 pounds. There are $1.50 off coupons offered too. Feline Pine also offers a guarantee you'll like it, so if you don't, you can get your money back.

I forgot to say that we are using the wood stove pellets - not the Pine - and its only $5.00 for 40lbs in the feed stores.

I bought storage bins and used a Dremel to cut holes for the sawdust. The Van Ness litter box grate might be too big and the pellets will fall trough.

You can buy a fry basket to sift out the sawdust.
