Not important, but were any of your cats from Craigslist?

Just wondering.

Daisy was a Craigslist kitten.

Yup, I found Carly on CL because the "owner" (I use that word loosely because I'm not even sure if she owned her or not) said that she shed too much. She was 3 weeks pregnant when I got her and I didn't know about it because I wasn't told. I wasn't told much of anything really. She was covered in fleas because she was obviously living outside which is how she got pregnant in the first place. I'm just glad she's with us and we have her kittens in a safe and loving home. They are beautiful like their mom and they needed to be born in an environment where someone cared enough to set things up for her and keep them safe and warm with quality food. I'd never do CL again though, I hate being lied to.

I'm glad there are good people like you who read craigslist and adopt from there, so at least some of those poor souls will have good lives.

I can't stomach it myself, and never read adoption ads, anywhere. No pet finder, no "free kittens to good home" ads in the newspaper, no craigslist. I avoid them all, I can't take the heartbreak.

The thing about CL is that most people lie. That's been my experience with CL. You have to take what they say with a grain of salt and realize it's a crap shoot with the health of the animal since most people aren't going to fully disclose problems because they want to get rid of their animal.

I was lucky because the woman who posted Daisy was a cat rescuer. The picture on the ad was Daisy and her sisters and brother all together on a bathroom floor. .. the text said they were a full litter rescue. Had the picture been different or worded differently, who knows, I might have bypassed Daisy.
But I sensed the woman was a good person, so I met Daisy and her littermates in that very bathroom.

I was also shown vet papers (proof of spay and other stuff) and over the phone (or perhaps within the ad, I don't remember) she asked for $75 to offset her out-of-pocket losses, which I paid on the spot. The rest is history. Daisy's a big cat now.

Petfinder isn't bad--It links you to all of the area shelters and shows you whats available from them. That said, I almost got a pair of craigslist kittens, but the owner ended up giving them to her friend instead. I got the kittens that I have now from a shelter I found on petfinder.

I know that Pet finder is a legitimate rescue/adoption site. I just can't take the heart break of thinking about all the animals out there who don't have loving homes, and worse, why they don't.

I know people who look at pet finder and craigslist as a matter of routine, not because they are looking for a pet, they do it just to look. It's too much for me to cope with.

I already cry daily over them all, I don't want to see their faces and know specifics, too.

I hear ya, otto. I've never looked up pets on CL, but I do torture myself with petfinder from time to time. It kills me, and I know it will kill me when I go to the site, to see all the homeless cats out there. All I want to do is take every one of them home with me. I don't know why I do it when I know I can't adopt even ONE more cat right now...

I have heard craigslist is a bad place to look for cats too. But I have to say, if it wasn't for petfinder I would never have found Sweetie
a little over a year ago. For those who don't know, Sweetie was a former rescue that was living in a small shelter that is located inside a vet clinic. After I saw his picture and information on petfinder, I made an appointment to go and see him and the rest is history!!!

There's too much heartbreak for me to fix, too. We're now caring for seven, three of which are our "originals" and are housebound. It's a lot of work and if I weren't "retired", I wouldn't be able to care for them the way I would call "proper".

I'd prefer to have them all in the house under my watchful eye, but, alas - just not feasible, so I just do the best I can for the former ferals, and the one stray that are outside most of the time.

So, like you - no pictures of these needy creatures, my heart just can't take it.

But let me say to those that are able to help these animals, you're my hero!

I haven't gotten any cats (or dogs) from CL, but I have a cat I found at a local shelter off of Petfinder.

It is awful, all the dogs and cats that don't have homes and someone to love them. I currently have 3 cats and 1 dog that are ours, 4 cats that we rescued as kittens and 2 dogs as puppies off the streets. Unfortunatly the 1 female rescue got pregnant and now has 3 almost 5 week old kittens.

I really don't want to have this many animals but I'm scared to advertise them because you never know who will answer the ads. I also can't stand the thought of taking them to the shelter because I don't want them sitting in a cage for who knows how long until someone desides they want them. I want them all to have a good, loving home.

I like Petfinder, but Craigslist rubs me the wrong way. I'd rather the people give their pets to the shelter, so that we could find them great homes, than offer them to whoever online. (But I live in an area with a very nice shelter, so I guess I'm a bit biased.)

My first kitten was a CL kitten. He was a black kitten, who we named Loki. He was living with a foster family, after he was found in the engine of a truck. Sadly, I had to find him a new home. Where we were living at the time, I couldn't have a kitty clawing furniture. I tried softpaws, and everything I could think of, and it didn't work. I found him a loving home instead, as I refused to declaw him (especially after I saw how they do it!!)

My dog was also a CL dog. I was just looking through, and saw her, and she was the cutest little pup. I couldn't help myself- and now I stay away! I do love her though, and have had her for over a year now.

Both girls were found on CL

I've also adopted out my some of my fosters through CL, although I don't just "free to good home" them. I ask LOT of questions, speak with the people/persons vet, have paperwork filled out and keep in contact with most of the families (I've lost contact with a few, which makes me sad but, can't win them all).

My Mialo is from craigslist. I got him at 7 weeks from an owner who took his mommy away from him at 5 weeks! He was tiny when I got him but he grew quite a lot. He's about 13 weeks now and such a great kitty! I have no problems with him. I really love him so much! I can't even imagine being without him.

Oh, so true. I adopted my first Sphynx, Harold, from CL...I later found out the girl who sold him to me had only had him for a month, found out he had HCM and quickly wanted to get her money back before he got sick and died. I spent thousands on his health care, and had him for 8 months before I had to let him go to the bridge.

However, I wouldn't give those 8 months back for all the money in the world. That boy changed my life forever.

Not to learn from my first CL experience...I adopted another girl, Helen, from CL. The man told me she was rescued from West Virginia but that he brought her here to FL to rehome her. I got to his house to see her, took one look and knew he was lying, his story kept changing, but there was no way I was leaving her there. Through a series of events, I ended up meeting her breeder and found out the real story: he had a traveling side show of exotic cats, and she was part of his "act". When the economy went bad, he sold off all of the cats. I was lucky this time because she was completely healthy, but everything he told me about her was a total lie, from her age to where she was from...everything!! Now she's in a better home and I call her my little circus clown.
