Anal glands

hi there people!

oh wow long time no see!

i have a question to all cat owners. did it ever happen to your cat to discharge anal glad liquid while being pet? I was brushing one of my cats and awfully smelling bright yellow discharge came out where anal glands are.
i've read a lot about gland inflammation but it looks like she is absolutely healthy. i wonder if it's normal for a cat to discharge it 'just because'.

thanks!

Hmmmmm...anal glad liquid is foul smelling but it is usually brown or black. Is your kitty spayed?

I recommend a visit to the vet.

from what i've read it becomes dark if there's an inflammation, if not, it should be clear or yellow/brownish.

yes she is spayed

i've already made an appointment to a vet, it's just i want to know whether anybody experienced something similar.

Okay, good.

My Jennie has trouble with blocked anal glands, but does not spontaneously express them, though I have heard of it happening with other cats, usually because of fear or other stress. I suppose any extreme emotion, even if a happy one, might have the same result?.

Let us know what you find out!

Yes, you are correct... However, if liquid is coming out like that, it means the glands are full and need to be expressed, and your kitty is not being able to empty them normally, during bowel movements... You do not want to have the pasty anal gland stuff - that is trouble, that is when your kitty is getting impacted...

My Lucky is like yours, and my vet said to bring her in when she starts licking her butt too much and liquid start coming out - hers is liquid clear/yellowish. She is the only one here with this issue...

thank you guys for your replies!!

we'll see our vet tomorrow or on sunday, i'll post the results!

i've talked to couple of cat owners and one of them said that some cats squeeze liquid if you pet it because of the whole muscles tension (when they push themselves towards hand or brush). mine goes absolutely crazy when i pet her, she seriously becomes high! lol mine doesn't lick her butt, no redness or tenderness. well vet knows better, will see what she'll say

when it comes to expressing the glands, there are two opinions on this case, one is that you have to do that if glands are not expressing themselves, but the other opinion states that what has to be done is the change in a diet. usually cats on a commercial food have this problem more often rather than raw eaters, or if it's a raw eater, diet still has to be tweaked to make poo harder

now i cant wait till i see what vet's gonna say lol

My female persian cat went thru this, but her anal gland actually ruptured. It happened once and they cleaned it up and got it "repaired", then a year later it happened again. So, the best course of action for her, since this kept re-occuring was to have the anal glands removed. They really serve no purpose other then to mark territory when out in the wild, so they don't need them. It's been almost a year since she had the surgery and she is doing great. They say it is rare in cats, but it does happen.

Smokie has problems from time to time. I know because he scoots his butt along the carpet in the living room. I did ask the vet about it and he said that apparently by scooting on the carpet his able to empty them sufficiently. The last visit he tried to expel one and didn't really get anything out.

turned out that everything is perfect with my furbaby. it's just when i pet her lower back and near the tail area for too long she pushes towards the hand so hard that by doing so she squeezes a tiny bit of liquid out of anal glands.
vet said that it's pretty rare to happen, but sometimes it does.

well the most important thing is that she is absolutely fine and healthy
