Can Someone Help?? Please???

Just joined about 5 minutes ago in hopes of getting some help. My 21 year old daughter recently moved out of our home an into our log cabin. It's an open area with a downstairs and open loft bedroom. She left her cat at home with me - THANK GOD!!! I LOVE THAT CAT!!!! However, she adopted two young adult cats from the Humane Society to take with her to the cabin. She's had them for a little over a month now. For about a week or so, they have decided to go insane around 3am or 4am every morning. Running all over the cabin playing with each other... up and down the stairs, across the bed, rolling & tumbling, and climbing all over the place. They are waking her up and keeping her up for a couple of hours. She is very frustrated! She LOVES them but is even thinking of returning them to the Humane Society if she can't get this under control. Can anyone PLEASE give us some help/advice? I can't stand the thoughts of them going back there, but I have more animals here at my house than I NEED, and just can't take them myself. Thanks! Lisa

I don't think active night owls (er, kitties) are very uncommon. I have an 8 month old kitten and a 2 year old cat who run up and down the stairs and thump all over the place for many hours of the night. I run a fan to drown out as much of the noise as I can, and otherwise live with it. I can't close my door because my 3rd cat comes and goes and would be quite upset if he couldn't get in the room. Cat #3 is the one who starts to bat my face at 4:30 every morning because he misses the concious me.

If she loves the cats, she'll find a way. I haven't slept a full night in years but they are worth it.

Does she keep them up and entertained throughout the day? I try to tire mine out in the daytime in hopes that they'll sleep more at night.

Also as a last resort, she could try separating them at night? :/ I feel like loud kitties at night are just something some of us have to deal with sometimes.

Tell her she needs to play with them and wear them out before going to bed. It's just like children, you can't expect them to sleep if they are all wound up. Get laser lights, feather toys, strings, whatever they like to play with and play with them before bed. It's not their fault they are up playing at night, if she doesn't like it, it's her responsibility to wear them out, she's the one who adopted them. If she wanted a cat that laid around all day and night she should have gotten an old fat cat.

I have 4 cats and yes they play at night every now and again, but usually they are quiet all night long because they know the schedule. Her cats will eventually learn that too, but for now she needs to teach them the schedule. My oldest cat just turned 4 and they are all 6 months apart.

My thoughts exactly. It takes time for cats to learn the new human's routine. And they need her to be playing with them every night and involving them in all aspects of home life so they adjust to her schedule.

Schedule feeding will help too, along with a regular nightly Game time.

Hopefully she was just blowing off steam with the return threat. Surely she wouldn't consider giving up on them so easily.

Anything worth having is a challenge, tell her.

My cat gets me up at 3 am every day. I just go with it. Many cats are nocturnal and that is their time to play/hunt. To return them because they are being cats is no reason.

All the advice you have received is spot on. They sound like happy, healthy cats. So many people here on the site would give anything to have that. So many sick kitties lately.

You just can't un plug a cat. Your daughter needs to do her share of training. I hope she will.

You are a good mom to be so concerned and to have taken them under your roof!
