Someone asked me why we needed their SSN# on an adoption application today and frankly I don't know. Most apps I have seen have it but after doing some searches online I have found a lot who do not. And I can't think of a reason why it would be necessary.

So maybe this is just a leftover from times gone by, but can anyone tell me why it should be on an application? I'll have to present my case to the rescue org CEO but I just thought I would get some feedback as to what you all think.

Thanks!

Lots of applications ask for a SSN, but if the adopter leaves it blank, it's no big deal. People (rightfully so) are VERY hesitant to give out their SSN these days, and unless it is absolutely necessary, most will leave it blank.

Can you adopt out without a SSN? I don't think I had to give my SSN when I adopted Holland. Usually a photo id (such as a driver's license) and another form of proof of identity (such as a credit card) suffice to establish identity. If proof of address is needed, most people will bring in a phone or energy bill.

If your shelter requires a SSN to adopt, I'm surprised this is the first time it's been fought.

I've never been asked and wouldn't give it without a real good reason.

Recently I went for an interview with a company that is supposed to help me get a job. When I filled out the forms I left the SS# blank until I was sure that they were OK and I was ready to sign up.

I would never give my SS# on a job application until I was actually offered the job and was filling out the employee documentation. If it was a company that needed to do a background check beforehand, I would want to know that I had the job pending the clean outcome of the background check.

Just so you know, anybody with a good knowledge of the internet can probably found out your full name, birth date, every address you've ever lived at, and your social security number. For $25, I can get a record of every phone number you've called in the last year, too.

I wouldn't give out the SS number unnecessarily, however. But DO ask for some positive form of ID, such as a driver's license number (which, by the way, is tied to your SS number by federal law).

That's what I had to do. Give my DL and bring in a current electric bill with my address and name on it. I don't understand why a SSN is needed.

There's no reason to have the SSN unless you run a credit check (probably not). I wouldn't want to give you my SSN to adopt a cat.
