Need Advice on Males: Neutering and Spraying

I have a barn cat that wants to be an inside cat.
He has not been neutered yet and I have seen him spray in our house.

I have understood that once they spray, they always will, even after being neutered.

I could really use some sound advice on this.

I and others have taken in adult male cats that sprayed when they were outside strays but stopped after neutering and coming in.

None I have taken in have ever had the chance to spray inside before neutering, though.

Your best bet, if you're going to proceed with making him a house cat, is to pick an easy to clean room for him to stay in after neutering and between deworming and intros. Do the usual cat intro routine and hope he doesn't feel that he needs to mark any territory.

Its a 50/50 chance if he continues to spray. Many will not. I know that breeders neuter older males and place them in homes with little to no problems in them spraying. So I would say 90% of them will stop spraying.

The important thing is to neuter him. If he behaves in the house, fine - but even if you have to put him back outside he will not be producing any more kittens

Good luck! He will be much safer inside. It may take a little time for the hormones to work their way out of his system.

You are good to take him in.

I just caught a stray that's been hanging around here awhile. He's an intact male, I've seen him spray outside. He's confined to the bathroom & we've had no spraying issues (even though I've had cats spray in there in the past). He got neutered on Tuesday. I guess I'd take a chance & see how he does, get him neutered & give him a shot.
